Living Forever

If I had a pill where you could live indefinitely, but never change your decision would you take it? I think I would. I’m just thinking about what if you go through like a 500 year state of depression after you really internalize you’ll never die. What would your opinions of religion be like since it’s geared a lot toward the afterlife and you no longer will have a chance to find out?

No. Life ain’t that great.

Yes please.

You’ll NEVER die? What happens when the earth gets absorbed by the sun in 5 billion years?

Not a chance.

(And if there were such a pill, it’s unlikely that it would be approved by the FDA anyway.)

Yeah, I think the part where you float around for billions of years, constantly suffocating in the cold vaccum of space, is not so desirable. Other than that though…

I would take the pill only if I could choose to die whenever I wanted, and of course I wouldn’t age.

Same. I like the way this Lea124 is thinking.

Actually, now that I think about it, once the sun explodes, you will probably spend at least a few hundred thousand years being consumed by super heated cosmic gasses. This also sounds quite undesirable.

You risk the wrath if Eru Iluvatar if you try to take away his Gift of Men.

^Word.

What about just becoming an elf Tolkien-style? You can still get killed or die of AIDS or something. You just stop aging at around 30 or so. So in this sense, being immortal =/= being indestructible.

(This is a very distinct departure from elves in the Dragonlance saga. They live for thousands of years, but they eventually die. Frisian will correct me if I’m wrong.)

does this mean you can be captured and tortured for all eternity? remember even wolverine was captured once

Good, then you can eat the corpses of the mortal FDA members after 5 billion out of 7 billion people decide to take the pill and we run out of food.

Yes, if I never age. I would take it at 36-38 yrs old. The sweet spot I hear from the men of wisdom.

One of the problems with homo sapiens is that they can’t get past certain problems as a species, because 1) the problems extend beyond their lifespan and thus they say “who cares” and 2) they are not able to identify the macro-historic pattern creating the problem in the first place because of their limited temportal scope.

Unlimited lifespan in a few individuals could help.

But the problem with never dying is that you would not evolve, sapiens are just one species in the homo genus, you’d end up being “a Neanderthal” 100,000 years from now.

STL FTW.

Kind of embarrassed I got that reference.

There can be only one.

I don’t mind dying. It’s just the idea of getting old. If I could live 100 years in a 20 year old’s body, I would die happy.

One of my favorite low budget movies is Man From Earth. Don’t watch if you want lots of explosions, its a dialoque based movie. Also try to avoid reading spoilers, as it ruins the experience. But if you have time, watch that movie with this question in mind. It may still be on Netflix

EDIT: They posted it on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hAarR4tVEHU

^ It’s an 8.0 on IMDB. I’ll check it out.

Will check it out, I’m always looking for new sci-fi recommendations.
