MAGA

National politics is broken in this country. 4-8 years in one direction followed by a 4-8 year swing in the opposite direction is just pointless. I’d like to see the country move toward a multiparty system, but that’s not feasible with stubborn Boomers still hanging around.

Agreed. Interestingly, I had a dream today where Biden was president and vice-pres was Pence.
(whether they are the best people to be in charge, i can neither confirm nor deny)

Allowing people to choose more than 1 candidate (as in a ranked system) would be a better way of voting. This would allow people to choose a candidate everyone can live with.

That’s the democratic system’s dilemma. I don’t think having a multiparty system would make a big difference. We have a multiparty system in my country and we have very similar swings as in the US. It’s a massive problem when considering today’s fast moving world. For example, how can you counter China’s growing influence when every 4-8 years a new administration steps in with a new view and strategy while China is playing the long game with a 30+ year strategy?

The American system is imperfect. I’ve wondered recently whether there should be another constitutional convention to improve the system. In particular, the electoral college has caused significant distortion; do you realize that if not for the electoral college, the war in Iraq never happens? If not for the electoral college, do you realize where the US might be in regards to global warming?

There are many big questions that are coming to my addled mind this morning. What is the goal of a political system? Should it be a priority of the US to counter China’s growing influence, and if so, how?

Anyway, I’m tired. Had far too much screen time the last few days. Going to get outside today and enjoy some lovely fall weather. COVID cases accelerating to record levels. Everyone, please practice good health habits. It’s going to be a long winter.

Indeed. Winter is coming.

Several networks call it. Joe Biden will be the 46th president of the United States.

Congrats to Biden. I wonder if Trump will flee the country, as he suggested:
(edit: I shouldn’t have to spell out that I’m half-joking…)

Politico: where will trump go if he quits the US

update:
Biden now has 290 electoral votes

Donald Trump, who lost the popular vote twice, is out golfing today.

Meanwhile, the US is seeing record levels of COVID cases as winter approaches, with more than 236,000 Americans dead.

Hopefully he’ll manage to reduce the polarization. A hostile and divided 'Merica goes nowhere.

Are you suggesting a causal relationship here? Do you have any evidence, or even any reason to believe that Hillary or Obama or Joe would have done any better?

Actually, they would have done a lot better. They would have prepared a concession speech and be willing to peacefully transfer their seat to the winner.

Question - if Donald Trump, back in March, had emphasized and exhibited daily the importance of something as simple as wearing a mask to prevent virus transmission, do you think 236,000 people would have died? Do you think thousands of a certain set of people would have been as vigilant about wearing masks as they were outspoken about not wearing them?

Yeah, that’s what I think. I think if Trump had acted like a leader who cares about his citizens, he would have pushed and demonstrated health-helpful behaviors as recommended by experts, and thousands of people who spent the past few months raging about government tyranny in the use of masks would have worn masks. And many fewer Americans would be dead.

Trump could man up and be ready to peacefully transfer his seat to the winner, but instead…

Biden won despite the Trump campaign and supporters trying to actively sabotage the election in his favor. Despite Trump appointee appointee Louis Dejoy destroying election mail sorting machines and eliminating overtime hours, exactly when usps was most needed. Biden won despite Trump supporters making blackmail letters to would-be Biden voters. Biden won despite voter suppression that somehow still exists in America even though it’s 2020. Biden won despite Republican states making exceedingly difficult for minority groups to vote. People didn’t just give up voting - they went so far as to drive for 15+ hours to cast their decisive vote and exercise their right as citizens.
