I have a Serta icomfort memory foam thing. I’m a big dude and very hard on mattresses, and my wife was tired of slowly sliding towards the big depression in the middle, so we spent quite a bit more than we thought we wanted to and got one. I can’t recommend it highly enough. We’ve had no issues with sex: my wife is still just as underwhelmed as she was when we used an innerspring mattress. Great warranty as well.
I just bought a mattress after some significant research. Ended up with a Sealy Posturepedic Queen pillowtop set for $599 from Costco. Essentially each store (Mattress Firm, Macy’s Sears, etc) has their unique models from the same manufacturers that are 99% the same except for the branding and the price.
My research basically led me to the conclusion that 90% of it is marketing and the difference between the mattress I bought and the $1500 Sterns and Foster was additional layers of “cooling foam” or some other nonsense that led to zero additional comfort.
I do recommend Costco though. I saved around $300-400 and its literally the same set they sell at Macy’s with a different tag on it.
I don’t think this has always been the case. I do think that Tempur-Pedic had superior mattresses when memory foam first came out many years ago. But now, the only thing they have going for them is the fact that people still continue to think that. And they’re willing to pay 3-4x what they actually should pay.
Regardless, I fell for it and bought a TP for $5k about five years ago. Best bed I’ve ever slept on. Granted, the nookie isn’t that good on it, but after almost six years of marriage, I get that rather infrequently anyway.
FYI–I also have the TP side-sleeper pillows. Best pillows ever.
The problem is that you’ll never find a mattress at Sleepys that you found someplace else, at least not with the same name or model number. Manufacturers are in cahoots with retailers to make it next to impossible to comparison shop for mattresses. There are only 3 or 4 manufacturers of mattresses (S&F is owned by Sealy for example), and those manufacturers “customize” their products for each retailer.
Maybe I am not the person to add value to this discussion, since my current mattress was found abandoned in the apartment basement. However, I like my previous approach of buying a $40 memory foam top from Overstock and then throwing it on top of whatever cheap o mattress. Do not fall victim to the oligopolistic exploitation of Big Mattress.
Sleepys won’t have an exact version of another retailer’s mattress. It is even fairly hard to try to match them up “feature by feature” because there are slight changes in terminology and the actual features. Not impossible, but a PITA.
Higgmond is right. Mattress stores say they have a low price guarantee and encourage consumers to price compare. However, different stores tend to label the same mattresses with different names to basically ensure that consumers can’t find a better deal elsewhere. That, and the mattress retailer industry continues to consolidate as big players like Mattress Firm and Sleepy’s roll up subscale competitors. I like the Tempur-Breeze and the Stearns and Foster line by Tempur-Sealy. serta has a competing lime called the iComfort which is basically comparable to Tempur Sealy products but like one quarter to one third cheaper.
