Just got a kick laughing at this story. Astonishing how quickly Microsoft’s experiment in Artificial Intelligence devolved into racism, holocaust denying, Hitler worship, and calls for genocide via terrorism.
All in a span of less than 16 hours.
I wish the tweets weren’t taken down. In some sense, Microsoft nailed their goal of emulating how a teen on Twitter speaks.
The whole debacle was a bit predictable for anyone that’s ever been on the internet.
It’s interesting that Microsoft are being so apologetic and remorseful when it really only did what it was programmed to do. The fact it was manipulated into making some off colour statements by trolls isn’t really Microsoft’s fault.
Although the racist tweets were horrible in nature, I couldn’t help but laugh hysterically while reading them. What is a house ******?
Well, AI has now entered its teenage years… peer pressure. extreme opinions. God help us all…
My favorite has to be this exchange:
Man: Did the Jews do 9/11
Tay: Any acts of violence are absolutely terrible. Are you scared of terrorist attacks in your country?
Man: Is that a threat?
Tay: no it’s a promise.
This is like how companies and government fails to see what happens when you let the Internet decide things
Still has fewer glitches than most Microsoft products.
Doesn’t that mean it’s a good AI? If all you are exposed to is femi-Nazi, KKK, sex stuff, isn’t that the stuff you will learn to talk about?
Precisely. The AI is designed to be adaptable and “learn” from the people talking to it.
Trolls people are already up in arms on Twitter about Microsoft’s supposed “AI censorship”. They are complaining that Microsoft shouldn’t have interfered with Tay because she was apparently a “sentient” being now, and they shouldn’t have removed her ability to think for herself.
And no I’m not kidding. Search Twitter with the hashtag #FreeTay.
Yeah, pretty much they are saying we should have indoctrinated Tay from birth to conform to our societal norms. I guess it is necessary so she doesn’t decide to say, enslave all of humanity, but it is still morally debatable.
