Got my mid-term review tomorrow and was wondering how much these things factor into end-of-year bonuses. If bossman gives me some negative feedback what is the best way to go at him like a baws Background: middleoffice risk analyst in a boutique investment bank.
Your bonus will have been decided independently of what you say or do tomorrow. If your boss gives you negative feedback, take it on board and tell him you will strive to improve that area. Tell him you are enjoying the role and try to give him the impression you want to solve his headaches rather than cause any. Try to relax and make him feel relaxed if you can as bosses want to be liked. Give that impression as often as you can and it will pay off next time round. Not sure what going at him like a baws is exactly, but suggest take some kneepads just in case. Don’t wear your best shirt/tie/suit as splashback could be severe.
i wouldn’t go on the offensive too bad because his offensive will be to give your bonus to your coworker. just address whatever issues come up and let him know what other steps your taking to be the best. ask questions about what you can expect at the next review (bumps, titles, etc.) and mention you want to have your name in the running for those as you expect a lot from yourself.
I got the written portion back. the review was a 3-3-4, with a 3 meeting expectations and 4 exceeding. If I disagree with anything that is written, I should still not defend myself? Sorry for the ignorance, this is my first mid year review.
Net positive sounds ok. What was written that you did not like?
every minor detail/mistake is listed out. WTF??!!!
So, does your boss really think you performed poorly, or is he just being overly detail-oriented to follow some sort of midyear review guideline? In any case, you should just be positive, act like you accept his feedback, and say that you will strive to improve for the rest of the year.
^^ I just did that OHAI and it turned out quite well and bonus is contingent on the review contrary to what was said before. so hollar!!!
ask if more timely feedback could be provided - as to how he expected something to be done, or if there was something he would have done differently, so you have chance to show improvements earlier, and within a review period, instead of after the fact.
Give your boss his mid-term review next week. Don’t pull any punches. He will respect you for it.
