Movie Futures

What are your views on the Movie Futures (Cantor) and the predictions by the co-creator Max Keiser of the potential bomb?

It won’t be much different than Intrade. I just tried to go to Intrade’s site a minute ago and received the big deny. The requested site: www.intrade.com has been denied. The site is categorized as Gambling. It’s gambling pure and simple.

I love this idea… http://www.cbc.ca/money/story/2010/03/11/movie-box-office-futures.html

I kinda like it myself since i’m a real movie ‘watch-aholic’ and though I will argue and give predictions and make non-monetary bets i don’t know if i’d be willing to put my money where my mouth is! Also you can’t see a surprised sleeper hit coming and make a killing cuz each movie has to meet a standard before they make contracts on it and movies that they think will be low revenue, short lived will not be offered. It’s too many ‘ifs’ for me. @Chuckrox8 isn’t a lot of Finance just gambling??

imagine betting on a Slumdog, Hurt Locker, Fahrenheit 9/11, Crash we should create a thread dedicated to this… I consider myself a movie buff as well

Buffett, Soros, Graham, Cohen, etc… As you move further away from wall street and get into normalized America the average joe probably views investing/trading somewhat in-line with gambling. I think the “Blair Witch Project” is the most successful movie ever at the box office in terms of profit margin. I think it only cost ~$25,000 for everything and it grossed $100MM+. The payoff would have been pretty nice with those movie futures.

You can hang your hat on at least some principles in finance – prices and rates are inversely related. There seems to be NO consistent formula for box office success. For every Hurt Locker there are 10 awesome movies that don’t gross anything. Fight Club was a bomb, Big Lebowski was in and out of the theatres and Braveheart barely broke even in the US. 15 years later these films are considered cult classics at a minimum. Fight Club and Braveheart featured highly bankable megastars that should have drawn both men and women. And Hancock & Mamma Mia rank among the top 50 grossing films of all time.

Mammia Mia made more money than Titanic in the UK. Great movie
