They need to do a city wide education campaign teaching you guys how to use trains again. Apparently after the hurricane disruption everyone forgot the doors are on the SIDE of the train.
Most people don’t know this, but the best thing to do is if you ever have the gross misfortune of falling into the tracks, try to run away from the train down the other end of the tunnel. Trains have to decelerate as they pull into the station and there is an emergency ladder at both ends. It also gives passengers and bystanders sufficient time to alert the authorities or at least wave at the conductor to slow down.
If you don’t think you can do this, there is usually a clearance area between the tracks and the edge of the platform that you can duck under, and you can also hide in between train tracks on the express line between the columns. Just be careful you don’t touch the third rail + the running rail, otherwise you are going to be toast.
Many people reportedly try to jump from the tracks and hoist themselves back up onto the platform, but this is very hard to do unless you’re athletic.
I once dropped valet on tracks. Had to jump down and get it. Even though i was pretty athetlic back then and could easily climb out still, my hands were a bit shacking when pulling up. It is all a mental image of being trapped and exponentially increased risk of death
