Need a Ruling - Briefcases

I say nay to the briefcase. I think “office schmuck/dinosaur/postal office management” when I think of briefcases.

I bought this bag a year or 2 ago in gray and never used it, such a waste of money:

I also have a free one that I got from ishares that I take to the gym to carry extra clothes and etc.

The key question for yea or nay on briefcases is: do you have stuff you need to tote in one? Actually, as tablets replace much of laptop functionality, small, thin briefcases start to make more sense than they have in recent years if you are regularly toting papers in addition to a tablet. When laptops were gigantic, they tended to destroy the structure of a nice leather briefcase, unless you had a hard shell.

When I was a professor, briefcases were very good for when you had to carry handouts to class or exams/papers back. So it really depends on whether you find yourself carrying stuff around all the time.

Briefcases are for drug deals only. I thought that was common knowledge?

I own a zero halliburton (one of those silver hardcases mentioned) and even though it is a cool case, it is really impractical. It is heavy, it doesn’t have enough separators and it is the same size no matter how much stuff you have in it.

I have to have a briefcase. I just bought a new one. Soft sided, relatively small. i use it every day. My phone goes in it. I usually have some reading material I take home. Always done it. Likely always will.

Your phone goes in it? Don’t you have pockets?

So I got this bad boy for Christmas.

I’m taking some flack for it at work. You know me, I’m an old school brotha and rock traditional things such as BlackBerry Bold, 12C, and Excel 2003 Ribbin on 2010.

The little shts I work with are giving me grief for this briefcase. Meanwhile they are rocking metro manbags, backpacks, and other purse like substites. These are the same whippersnappers who are probably hipsters on the weekends.

So I need a ruling. Classic leather boxy briefcase or some soft satchle like manpurse?

This is definitely old school! Love it!

I mean, not sure if that is your thing, but it is definitely a classic

^ My man Don Draper! I knew you’d have my back.

Bad a$$ old school, but you won’t get laid walking with that.

Here is a link to my discussion about briefcases two years ago. Unfortunately, a lot of the links in the thread no longer go anywhere:

Personally, I don’t like the boxy attaché case look, but that’s just personal taste. I’m not sure where you stand on it, since sometimes we have to smile and accept gifts that are close but miss the mark a bit, and sometimes we get just what we want. Personally, I prefer something more like the lawyer’s cases that can stand on their own.

Although I didn’t end up getting it, I still very much liked this one (in cognac brown, or burgundy, it looks a little blah in black in this photo): http://www.eastsideluggageshop.com/eastside/product.asp?pf_id=PAAAAAFCFHMKBMGK&ad_id=GoogleBase&gclid=CMWXgrO12rQCFVCd4AodwDoA1w#.UOzvTHM4U4Q

Thanks.

I just dig the box. Reminds me of what my pops had.

Pretty good links in the thread Bchad. I like ^^ one though. Owned a bag similar to this one: http://www.flotoimports.com/Firenze-briefcase.html some time back. Everybody thought I was some kind of salesman (the kind that sell cheap perfumes or sun glasses).

Not sure what your style is, but I would strongly recommend Ted Baker. They tend to have a good balance of traditional style with a little flair

If it works for you CvM, that’s all that matters. You lose the use of one hand though when you’re walking.

^I’m a traditional business man. I rock suspenders on my suits which gets alot of applause. For some reason the briefcase is attracting snickers around the office.

I like the traditional box too, but I have to agree with Higgmond: not being able to strap it over the shoulder is a big negative. I must admit that I am at the point where how it “looks” take a severe back seat to how it “works.” That goes with everything I own. I wish I was young and hip like y’all, but I ain’t.

Yeah, come to think of it, the one I like looks like the one my dad carried. Probably not a coincidence, either.

^ are you suggesting that you and CvM have the same father?

Dude, you’re like the black Gordon Gecko.
