No Purple Heart for Ft. Hoodlums

Apparently, DoD has declined to give a Purple Heart to those inured in Major Hasan’s shooting spree. They say that it would dilute the value of the award.

For the record, I agree with DoD. The PH should be reserved for those who are wounded in combat, not for those who sit at a stateside desk and happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’m not trying to diminish the heartache and injuries that those involved sustained. However, if you’re standing in line to see a teller at the bank and a robber shoots you, that’s different from a police officer who’s trying to stop a bank robber.

The fact that it was even considered that they would receive the PH is troubling. I guess it makes good press for Rep. Carter though.
