let’s be serious. the U.S. just siphons all the water out of the Great Lakes anyway and allows the cheap labour to over while crying, they shouldn’t be here but thanks for the empanada and pina colada, poolboy/gigolo/ohai!
Obama, who has faced backlash from the GOP on the plan, said he has one message to Republicans: Pass a bill.
“The primary response that I have to Speaker [John] Boehner and others is go ahead and pass legislation,” the president said. “They don’t need me to act. In fact, I encourage them to act.”
Are the two mutually exclusive? Why not force English competency on legal would-be-immigrants (thereby shifting the burden to them)? Seems like a valid argument against illegal immigration.
Yes. Learning English should be the responsibility of the immigrant and should be a prerequisite for certain kinds of status. Even if it is just in terms of attitude at first, all immigrants should be open to the idea of assimilating US culture, instead of the “melting pot” kind of thing that PC people try to promote. While a policy that promotes English learning needs to be carefully designed, it seems fair to me that learning English should be a civic duty, similar to not littering or exercising your right to vote.
Fyi, yes, I do have an agenda. My agenda is to promote empowerment among potential immigrants while reducing financial burden on the education system. Everywhere, people complain that immigrants cannot get ahead or are taken advantage of due to lack of English language skills. Encouraging people to learn English is a logical step to improving the situation of immigrants.
It has been an absolute shock to me how many hispanics with no SSN come in and pay taxes on their pithy incomes. (I also see a lot of fake SSNs) We’re talking 12k in annual income from cleaning houses or delivering tamales, and they will come in and file a tax return with an ITIN and pay self employment tax. And they’re excited to be participating in “the system.”
The other 50% of people who use this service are on food stamps, collect welfare, are able to spend money on rims and tattoos, but haven’t had a steady job in 5 years. Most of them work for maybe 2 months a year before they get fired and get on some type of disability or unemployment. Yet somehow they qualify for thousands in credits (earned income being my favorite) and take home a few grand just for coming in. My favorite part of dealing with these people is that they always ask why their refund is less than it was last year, then get mad and yell at you after doing their taxes for free.
I can say with confidence that I’ll take the Latin immigrant with some work ethic over the welfare white/black trash any day of the week.
I was speaking to an acquaintance whose parents are Chinese immigrants that moved to California. Growing up, he was not allowed to speak Chinese to his parents or grandparents. Only English, even though his parents didn’t speak a word of English…
Now, unsurprisingly, he’s managed to completely assimilate and is a director of research for a decent firm. He’s now trying to learn Mandarin.
I agree with stratman. Most immigrants are extremely insistent with their children that they learn English even if they themselves never learn. That includes a friend of mine whose parents are hourly wage laborers who barely speak a word of this language. He’s doing well though.
Their pay? If they were more productive, they would command higher wages. But their low education levels tends to relegate them to lower-value manual labor.
Not really. There are plenty of able-bodied people who won’t work because the government subsidizes them not to or requires employers to pay more than their output is worth.
