I know for sure I will need to erase several time in this exam. I can tell that was a massacre for me last year with that pen. This year I carry a dozen of pencil.
I’m going for the Pilot FriXion option, but will test it this weekend in a mock. The reason they don’t want us to use pencil is the way the papers are graded. Every paper is photocopied and teams of markers specialise in marking a particular question. No single person ever sees your whole paper. The photocopying is a lot easieer to read if it’s in ink.
I am going to use Pencil. I am bad at writing perfect the first time, so I need to erase often. Pencil serves me better. I dont care if it fades after Aug
That is perfectly fine amit_cfa2. You can use a pencil for the exam. Please note however that you should only use a pen and not a pencil for the exam. Please let me know if you have any further clarifications regarding my post. Regards, Magix.
magix, classic CFA style
I found some “Liquid Graphite” pens last year that worked pretty well. They look a bit like pencil, and they can erase like pencil, but it feels like a pen when you’re writing it, and it is, technically, a pen. Unlike the classic erasable ink, it doesn’t smudge all over the place, nor does it smudge like a regular pencil. It’s a nice option, and, yes, they did grade my exam and I did pass.
If the fit chick that has so far sat near me for both L1 and L2 puts in an appearance again (London, blonde, you KNOW who you are…) then I will be writing in man yoghurt, not ink.
and I thought they wanted blood sweat and tears…
How about a pen/pencil combo: calculations in pencil and easy responses in pen?
lol @ mandelbrot The ‘pen or pencil’ dilemma is one that has occupied the minds of L3’ers for a long time. I think the key is to not be indecisive. Just decide on one (go with your gut) and stick with it. There will always be strong valid arguments for the alternative. But given that there is no clear winner, you can save your self some time by just picking what you’re comfortable with and not thinking about it. I for one decided on Pen a couple of months back and sticking with that
I’m going in with my Lehman pen that I’ve saved for this special occasion. This one is NOT GOING DOWN!!
What if the ink supply defaults on its obligations halfway through?
Just about spit my coffee over the computer screen Mandelbrot… LOL BTW, anyone in Canada have a source on those pilot pens? Amazon can’t ship to Canada.
I’ll bail him out with my Federal reserve pen and if that doesn’t help I have the Social Security pen. The taxpayer never defaults.
^^ lol!!
Where to find this “Liquid Graphite” pen ? Any idea? MH
Dwight: When held over heat, the invisible ink will reveal that everyone should meet at the warehouse immediately. Do not ask me where I got the invisible ink. Urine. It was urine.

How about crossing out if incorrect rather than erasing - it saves time?
