Person of the year or Man of the year?

So trump won ‘person of the year’ from Time magazine then at one of his speeches he talks about the fact he would rather be ‘man of year’. He asks a jeering crowd of men and woman what they would prefer the award to be calledl; ‘man of year’ applause and cheers, ‘person of the year’ …silence.

What i don’t understand is why Americans would rather it be man of the year than person!? Are women not supposed to win this from Time magazine? I am baffled!

The lunatics are running the asylum bruv! forget about rational analysis, Just insert CUCK, AMERICAN, PATRIOT, WHITE, MAN or OIL in any sentence and you are guaratneed cheers from the braying mob.

I disagree with them, but I think that Trump’s “Man of the year” comments just tap in to people’s frustration over political correctness and their reactions against having to be hyper-careful about their word choices or risk being called racist or sexist or something.

I do think the Left sometimes gets a bit McCarthy-like in their language policing. On the other hand, is it wrong to suspect someone of racism or whatever if they litter their language with epithets? Obviously, there is some middle ground possible here. Also, society evolves and language evolves along with it, albeit sometimes with a lag.

I used to use the generic he and inclusive “Man” because much classical writing did so and so it sounded nicer to my ears, but it doesn’t cost much to be polite and inclusive and so now I have gotten more used to the language changes.

“Person of the year” doesn’t have the same ring to it. Imagine if we called all firemen firepeople or policemen policepeople. I think Trump just looks at it on this simplistic level. I do not think he is insightfully tapping into the deep inner frustrations of the American middle.

On a fundamental level though, “person of the year” is a superset of “man of he year”, so it should be a better category.

So trump only wants to be the top man? Got it. Plenty of women in this world that blow him out of the water by any measure. I understand the anti-PC counter culture I just find it interesting that the group that whines about the victimhood mentality finds it so easy and convenient to constantly play victim

I don’t use the word ‘policemen’ i just say ‘police’ unless i’m talking about someone in the singular. I also say ‘fire department’ not fireman.

Gotta side with Ohai on this one.

Most of my friends are in business or STEM . When I step out of those circles I am always shocked at how sensitive people can be about these things.

As it probably pretty obvious, I’m a bleeding heart liberal and support inclusion but if I’m being honest, ‘Man of the Year’ sounds better to me. If I ever get my arse out of this office and achieve something I’d rather be awarded ‘Man of the Year’ than ‘Person of the Year’

Not by Time though, they gave it to Trump and nominated Farage so they can get tae fuck.

I think there are two reasons that “policeman” sounds better to many of us than “policeperson”.

The first one is just that many of us grew up hearing it, and so we’re just more used to it. So it’s habituation. After hearing “police officer” or some other variant for a while, it doesn’t sound as cumbersome as it did the first time around. Similarly “stewardess” vs. “flight attendant.”

The second is that “man” is one syllable. If we had a one syllable generic inclusive, I suspect it would feel just as elegant after the initial adjustment.

If we were just used to saying “moneyassholes” instead of “investment manager,” some of the rest of us might be surprised to learn that you don’t really like being called that, even though most of us think it sounds smoother, with fewer syllables. And we’d tell you, “sure, *you* aren’t really a moneyasshole, but lots of investment managers are moneyassholes anyway…”. And you’d say, “No, it’s investment bankers that are asses, investment managers are actually responsible people.” And we’d say “stop being so sensitive, it’s just a word. It’s not like anyone thinks you need to be an asshole to manage money, or that you are an asshole if you manage money.”

EDIT: maybe that analogy would work better with “moneyb*tch” instead. It rolls of the tongue so much better, and I like the way you can say “Yeah, I talked to my moneyb*tch yesterday and he said that I have to keep my duration under control when Yellen starts upping the rates.”

I’m indifferent but I could see someone preferring “man”. Historically it was man and the change to person was just a pc, feminist win. Also, when I hear “man of the year”, I always thought it referred to “mankind”, not some type of sexist label that the liberals are trying to make everyone feel guilty about. Glad that Trump won and crooked H lost.

solid point bchad. If i won an award though I would prefer to be called living organism of the year, but Trump would not have won that, Harambe would have

I don’t think Time were too happy about giving him the award anyway

Bias media gotta be bias while Trump is too busy winning and Making America Great Again!

I don’t get it. To call a title that goes to both men and women a “person” award seems just plain correct.

people dont like change so they will insist 1 + 1 = 1 because it sounds better to them

too bad he is dead

rip

In 90 years it went to six women. Anyhow, why not just woman of the year when a woman wins it and man of the year when a man wins it or just who cares anyway. And moreover, who cares that Trump cares? Still surprised they haven’t vacated the Hitler win TBH like they vacate coaches wins and awards. If something’s offensive about that list to anybody, it’s probably offensive for Jews / anybody to have to look at that. Useful lesson or reminder of historical context, I guess.

Growing up in a rural area, I know a good many people that wasted the last 8 years lowering their general state of happiness by choosing to be offended and outraged over every possible perceived micro aggression they could weave in their minds about Obama. Literally doesn’t matter what he did. He follows through on his word and it’s tyranny, he curbs his stance and he’s two faced. I was visiting friends in Brooklyn last weekend and watched as they obsessive compulsively wove every news piece into a mood altering tirade. I mean, there are understandably a lot of Trump related things to be concerned or frustrated about, but you lose a lot of credibility when you start resorting to a Six Degrees of How I’m Offended. I don’t think people get that the only thing they’re going to accomplish is lowering their enjoyment of life over a four year period over some inconsequential shit.

Like… Tillman pick? Great pick, Tremendous, Best friend - Sechin, he is a good man, Putin… Putin too, i talked to him, he said we will make America Great Again… together
