Please advise on a job description

Hi guys.

I need advice on a position I may be interviewing for. It’s for a company that provides investment software technology platforms to traders/hedge funds/banks/asset managers etc. The position is for a consultant whose primary responsibilities include the implementing of the platform and maintaining of relationships with the investors.

I know it won’t probably count towards the CFA exam but I’m quite unhappy in my position and I am looking for a change. I also feel that while I may be learning a lot more, I am more of a cerebral type (ie more academic/research oriented) and the new potential job may not be for me.

I am currently working for a small financial news company as an analyst but while the job per se is interesting, I have hit a wall in terms of knowledge and growth. My hours are terrible.

So what should I say? Should I take it anyway if I was offered the position?

Thanks

Is the company First Derivatives?

Nope but similar. I’d rather not say to be honest for obvious reasons…

If you are the cerebral type, this isn’t the job for you. That is clear. No point going from one job you don’t like to another job you don’t like.

DudeCFA, thanks for your advice and I agree with your conclusion but what I said is that I like my current job. I don’t like the hours because I can’t network and grow in the industry (i work overnight as you can see from my posts). I just want to change for an opportunity for new skills and normal hours in a bigger company. I don’t know how it would affect my career though. That’s why I’m asking

P.S. I actually considered quitting before having anything lined up. Yes… in this economy. That’s how miserable I am.

Well, you would definitely network and yes that is a valuable tool. Would you enjoy it or hate it for different reasons - maybe you are not a people person, don’t like travel, won’t be cerebrally challenged?Only you can answer this. Maybe you need to make the move to find out the answer - maybe you would love it. If you do go for it and get it, make sure you get a profile on Linked In and add add add!

Ok so actually I do miss interaction with people and I’m not a recluse or anything, plus they would be institutional investors not some guy trading from his mother’s basement in Kansas (no offense…). I love travelling. My only reticence is the intellectual part and the CFA goal. I’m not sure it would count towards it. I’m already on LinkedIn if you want to network :). P.S. I studied in Switzerland, Geneva. Where are you?

I’m over Zurich way but a big fan of the French speaking side (i’m English for the record). I’m very keen to network. Only thing is, I quite like the element of anonymity afforded by AF as you can be more honest / contentious / frivolous / adolescent. Sometimes, though not often, I like to let rip! Though I guess that goes both ways. So, how do we connect?

Well if you have a semi anonymous email address I could write you. Mine shows both my real name and last name and yes I love the anonymity provided in the AF which brings out unashamedly our baser instincts. I have the interview today so I’ll go with an open mind but dragging my feet…

Good luck with it but don’t drag your feet or it will show (been there, done that). Go for it as if you really, really want it. You can um and ah when you get the offer… I’ll sort out a semi anonymous email address over the w/e and post back here

It’s semianonymousCFA@gmail.com

Sent you an emai
