Behold what Volvo’s Chinese overlords have bestowed. Volvo wants to spin off its Polestar division (it’s sort of like a lame version of BMW M division) into a line of electric cars, and this car is the first, and halo car for the brand.
It looks not bad! However, I am wondering if this car is sufficiently differentiated from the market, and in fact, Volvo’s own models. The interior and some exterior details are a lot like the S90 os XC90. The hybrid powertrain is confusing and complex. Other manufacturers are skipping hybridization altogether and going straight to electrification: https://www.porsche.com/usa/aboutporsche/christophorusmagazine/archive/374/articleoverview/article01/
Also, what is this going to cost? $120k? I’m not sure if Volvo has the brand “cachet” to pull this off.
Wow, 600 hp/737 lb ft of torque and carbon fiber body…
The stats are great but it needs to be styled much more aggressively if it wants to pull a higher price. This thing looks plainer than the AMG GT, 911 turbo/ gt3, new vantage, etc but seems to be able to blow them all away on performance… what’s this car’s competition?
Based off styling and size alone (6” shorter than 4 series) puts it around the $50k mark, imo
Good question. Since this car uses the same platform as the S90, it is likely meant to be a GT coupe rather than sports car. A real sports car will be unrelatable to other Volvo cars too. So, it will probably be along the lines of Mercedes SL or Lexus LC500, rather than Audi R8, Acura NSX or 911 Turbo that have similar horsepower (no one is going to pay $150k+ for a Volvo anyway). Based on the specifications, it could be a $150k car from another brand. However, the mainstream platform, plain looks and carry over interior all communicate a more mainstream intention.
Edit: In terms of styling, the car looks like it should be an Audi A5 competitor. However, there’s no way Volvo will offer all that power, 90 miles of EV capability, and all that carbon fiber for $50k. Why would anyone buy a BMW 3 Series for $50k when something like this is on the market? It will most likely be around $100k, which is what those features will cost, particularly in such a low volume car. However, no one will buy it, since it looks like a $50k car and it’s a Volvo…
Size is not such a good indicator of cost for high end cars. Porsche 911 is shorter than a BMW 4 Series, but can cost $200k.
This won’t cost >$100K - in fact it won’t be for sale at all!
We’ll have the chance to pay a low monthly subscription fee, which I’m sure will approximate to something quite outrageous. I do really like this car though.
i avoided clicking on this thread as i thought it was yet another nsfw ‘kmd the peeler’ thread. glad to hear there are some awesome people in the brand naming business.
