Poutine, butane

What are your thoughts on this Canadian dish, and is gas preferable to charcoal for barbeque? Inquiring minds need to know.

Poutine is awesome! charcoal > gas for taste, but you can’t start a whole charcoal grill for two hotdogs so gas is more convienent.

agreed. use butane when preparing poutine.

Not a fan of poutine or butane. Propane or methane is better for BBQ.

I’m still trying to figure out what poutine is and if it’s related to vegemite. (Sidebar: Why don’t we have more Australians on AF? They’re awesome.) As for grilling, gas is more convenient for sure. And, you can always add wood chips to get a smokey flavor. But, true grill masters will always go with charcoal.

Also, since I live in the BBQ capital of the world, just want to be sure we all recognize the difference between BBQing and grilling. I can’t stand it when someone says they’re “BBQing” when all they’re really doing is throwing a flank steak over a propane grill.

FT hooked it up last year. some delicous poutine

I didn’t know you lived in Austin.

As noted before, gas is definitely easier. Turn a knob, turn another knob, push a button, and you have a fire going. If you want higher heat, you turn the knob to the right. If you want lower heat, you turn it to the left. Charcoal is certainly much more difficult to start and to control.

If I’m doing hot dogs and hamburgers, I use my gas grill. If I’m doing ribeyes, I’m using the Big Green Egg (which uses charcoal). And I don’t know if it’s even possible to do briskets and ribs on a gas grill.

I know to what you’re referring to and that article was a hacket job. They counted Kansas City, MO and Kansas City, KS as two different cities. Had they just looked at the KC metro area (like any sane person would do) it wouldn’t have been close.

That said, I like TX BBQ. Screw Memphis and the Carolinas though.

^I was surprised to see Lockhart, TX at #3. Not that it doesn’t have the quality, but its population is only about 10,000 people.

Anybody who visits Austin needs to make the 30-mile trip to Lockhart and eat at all the BBQ joints there. Well worth the drive.

Classic poutine (fries, cheese curds, and gravy) is good, especially from one of those road side stands in the province of Quebec. Galvaude (fries, gravy, peas, and shredded chicken) is especially good!! What I don’t care for is those “kitchen sink” poutines with avocado, salsa, chili, pig fat, chocolate sauce, raisins, etc. that some chain restaurants put out there.

Gas grilling is very convenient. When I want good BBQ, I have to wait until I am in the southern USA or when RibFest comes to town!

Peas? Yuck.

I don’t know from cheese curds, but I used to love me some cheese fries with gravy after a night of drinking.

is mushroom allowed on poutine?

we misuse the word bbq (same way you us folk deep fry rice with cream cheese and avocado and some protein and smother it with some sweet sauce and call it “sushi”) but for us it’s summer+beach+grill. Veg, meat, fish, whatever, just lots and lots of food and beer. It’s amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever had good ‘authentic’ bbq- is it a location thing, like you can’t find decent mexican food north of somewhere, CA? Do you need a grill or can you do it with a dutch oven and broiler?

BTW–you need to watch more King of the HIll.

You referenced butane in the title of the thread. Butane is used for cigarette lighters and blow torches.

Most gas grills operate on propane. If you have a liquid natural gas line available, then LNG is also an option.

^ butane is used to barbeque crack

I only recommend the best of the best. If I put my name on the line, it’s because it’s good. Not surprised you liked the place.

I recently grilled over charcoal for the first time in a couple years a 2 weekends ago and it was a royal pain. Give me a gas grill any day. Also a fan of poutine. It’s one of the few good food and beverage items Canada has given the world, along with a few types of beer, and not Molson Canadian.

Peas on poutine is actually quite good. One of the local shops sell a chicken with pease poutine that is surprisingly delicious. Mushrooms are not in purist poutines but still good.

I like my poutine with bacon, sausage, and pulled pork. It’s quite delicious.

Charcoal if you are cooking for more than 2 people.

Poutine ?

Meh. Fat on fat with more fat.

If I’m going to become a lardass you bet it’s going to be on better stuff than that.
