Professor Scott Galloway - NYU Stern

Does anyone know this clown? It’s no wonder that he’s resorted to teaching. Where I come from, manners are appreciated in the workspace regardless of stature. I should waltz in his class an hour late after killing three 40s just to spite his sour ass. I’ll do it Eurotrip style, waltz in and proclaim, “Oh, this isn’t where I parked my car.”

I read about this a while ago. Notice how it’s NYU again…

^ word. Where there’s smoke… I always hated arrogant professors in B school.

In my experience, law professors are the worst.

Can’t see a problem in what he said, makes sense really.

Blast from the past. Sure, the professor was a dick, but it’s a great email.

I dunno, I think the professor was definitely unnecissarily rude and if he wants to talk about office politics, he should consider that writing that email would never be tolerated in any level of a non academic organization. It is poignant to me that all these cases seem to come from nyu

^ Word.

You gotta nip some things in the bud. Yes, the email was harsh, but students come in demanding their own personalized final so that they can take off a week early to go skiing with their girlfriend. Students figure it’s ok to answer their cell phones in class. Students start talking loudly with each other in the back because they figure they can’t be heard. And they whine that they have to read and study, rather than just getting an A for showing up (not even on time). Yeah, it was harsh, and I would not personally do that, but I can totally see where the prof is coming from. And I think that a little more discipline in the classroom would not necessarily be a bad thing.

It’s fine if the professor just said it was “class policy” and such. He can have whatever policy he wants. The problem here is that he took the time to write a 500 word essay to show that he has the biggest university penis. It’s a complete overreaction.

There’s a difference between discipline and acting like a pompous 5 year old. Discipline is making yourself clear and then enforcing in an even handed manner. I don’t think his original action was totally out of hand. I think his response was. The student wrote what I thought was a fair and well worded explanation. And I think being open is a great thing. The professor could have said, “I understand where you’re coming from, but this is my overall reasoning behind my rules and actions… I do apologize if I upset you, that was not my intention. However, those are the rules I have set in place and I will continue to enforce them. Again, I apologize for the misunderstanding and hope I can see you again in class at some point under better circumstances. Sincerely, Dr. _______” Takes less time to write than his tirade, and generates goodwill rather than destroying future potential value. Maintains the existing rule structure. Any real world manager and not some academic NYU charlatan knows you don’t go around sh*tting on people’s lawns all willy nilly just because you think you can. For a man who spent his tirade preaching about real world office politics, he certainly has no f*cking clue. Then again, he is in marketing, so he must picture himself as Don Draper.

Someone should create an “over sensitive Analyst Forum guy” meme.

Good points BS, and your bit about “this is the policy and this is why” is how I probably would have handled it. But I think we’ve all gotten steamed at some point and sent off an email that can be looked back upon as a tirade and not what we feel proud of. One of my managers taught me “Never press ‘send’ when you’re hot [-headed].” That turns out to be very good advice. The question is whether these kinds of emails are one-offs that get publicized or if they are patterns. And how they get publicized is relevant too. It may be that NYU students are more prone to publicize professor emails, and that’s why it looks like an NYU problem, when in fact what’s happening is that NYU profs just have to send a lot more emails, and that 3% of heated stuff has a 50% higher chance of being circulated around the web. Result: it looks like NYU profs are extra mean. We need to compare that to the number of ordinary emails and how other situations are handled by the same profs in order to get a real measure of stuff. NYU students may well be pushier than most - this is New York after all - and some of this can be a reaction to that. Anyway, it’s just one data point, and needs to be taken in context. The other email from the student who didn’t want to study Zucotti park isn’t really in the same category, I think, because the professor was basically polite, but trying to be firm about students sometimes having to study people and positions that they disagree with.

The other incidents we were referring to were actually NYU students misbehaving, this is a first for the professors. One was an intern at one of the IB’s (JPM?) that went on an obnoxious subway tirade to a subway worker about “do you know who I am and what schools i’ve been to” which got caught on video. The second one was more recent and I forget, but pretty much equally obnoxious. So yes, these are probably one offs, all I’m saying is Columbia is in NYC as well and they don’t seem to be having these issues.

NYU people seem to suffer from an inferiority complex. As in, they tend to liken themselves to Columbia or other better schools, but they know that they’re not in that league yet. This manifests in the form of public outbursts. That’s why in all of these people (this professor, subway girl, etc.) make it a point to mention how great of a school NYU is - it’s like they are trying to convince themselves of this as well. It’s kind of like how Harvard people suffer from a guilt complex. Everyone praises them for going to Harvard, so they feel the need to tell everyone that Harvard was “just ok” or that they had this problem or that problem.

NYU is elite in finance though primarily due to location, in every other field it is decent. Probably more on par with schools like Georgetown/Tufts etc.

NYU is the best school i’ve went to!

I always thought it was funny how people would wait for the professors’ backs to be turned before “sneaking” out of the lecture halfway through, as if they’re not going notice the empty seats. One of my favorite games when someone got up and was about to leave try to throw your voice and say “I’m outta here!” or “Peace!” Ah, the good ol’ days.

I like his email - sometimes chumps get checked.
