Prorated Membership

Just tried to pay my CFA dues and wondering if this has happened to any of you? I took L3 this year and went ahead and did all my sponsorship and work experience approval in March 2011. I paid $275 for CFA Institute and $75 for local society. Now July 15 is here and they want me to pay the full $350 again. Why wouldnt this be prorated??? I called a customer service rep who is going to try to roll my dues to 2012 but why the hell would they not warn you they dont prorate dues in the first place? They make a big deal about going ahead and joining before you pass L3. I would have waited for June 30 to pass if I had known. My company pays my dues but I hate to ask bean counters to shell out $350 again 3 months later. Has this happened to any of you? What was the result? Thanks for any thoughts.

If I remember well, when you register before April 1, you pay full dues until June 30. When you register between April 1 and June 30, you pay nothing until June 30 (this was what I did). Concerning your last point: Maybe it’s a good idea to wait a few extra months before getting the dues reimbursed again.

I am from Toronto. I checked the fee schedule related to the Toronto Society and it pointed out “fees are not prorated”. http://www.torontocfa.ca/imis15/Content/BecomeMember/HowtoJoin/Content/Site_Navigation/Become_a_Member/How_to_Join.aspx?hkey=2c56a88e-eca6-4d83-bbae-cf366bb0d8c9

USD350 is a heavy burden to those in developing/emerging countries. What benefits can we have once we have become a regular member/charterholder ? No wonder that someone told me that he does not like to become a regular member/charterholder even thouigh he has passed the L3 exam and his has work experience of more than 48 months as long as his company recognize the fact that he has passed the L3 exam.

It is indeed a burden. I already have plans of using the exam reimbursement to pay the dues, if I pass (hope I pass)…

USD 350 per year ! But what are the benefits ? Only for using the three characters of “CFA” ?
