What is really funny when you started talking about spies, when I was at university KGB (now it is called SVR) tried to recruit me. I had a nice telephone conversation and then I was invited for a private chat cause obviously nothing much could be discussed over the telephone. Here is my theory…
During the communism, there was very little choice in any kind of consumer products including a hair color. From what I’ve heard there were literally 3 color types: blond, red and the black. Black makes you older, very few can pull of blond, so the red was the obvious safe choice… Since so many women were using it, it didn’t get this “slutty” aura… At least that is how I think it is perceived in US.
Nowadays with all the choices available I am not sure it is as popular anymore with younger generation.
Also hena is very popular, as it is considered safer than regular hair color and it gives the red tone.
