I agree with you. However, just to nit pick… some parts of China were in fact colonies, notably Hong Kong and Macau. Also about the opium thing… many people say it was to “weaken” the country, create dependence, and stuff like that, which might or might not be true. But yes, it is not the same as actual colonization.
Can we all just pause for a moment to reflect on how good we are at hijacking threads? It’s pretty damn funny if you ask me.
Yeah, Nehru is culpable, but how about your leadership long before him? The kings of India. I blame them. It’s not the white guys that f’ed you over. It was your own political elite class who made these deals with the Crown.
You keep repeating statements that are objectively false, and you refer to your own personal history to back it up. wtf?
There is a clear record of destroying local industries, extraction of wealth, and genocide under British rule, India had schools, ports, agriculture, and mining for ages. The railroad was one benefit I concede.
Not that I am an expert in India socioeconomic history, but isn’t colonization widely credited for uniting India (there was no “India” before that, just random little states), and creating the foundations of democracy and industrialization? Where is this clear record of destruction that you speak of? I’m sure not everything was good, and there were probably a lot of atrocities under the 100+ years of British rule, but are you sure the country would be better in 2012 if there were no British colonists?
Indeed.
Just like any other nation, India has been united on and off throughout its history (Think Germany). The current state is just the latest incarnation (no pun intended).
By depriving the Indian economy of capital and investment? There were pockets of industrialization in places like Bengal and Mumbai, apart from that, I don’t think anyone really believes the Raj actively invested in industrialization.
FYI I totally concede the benefits from British rule - railroads, and the opportunity for the creation of a united India (Except for the Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka bits)
Anyways back on topic.
Kankan, how’s your search going?
Oh man what a list! I’m hungry now. I do miss it.
Let’s add a few more:
Chipotle, Chile’s, The Olive Garden, Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse, Bertuccis Brick Oven, Pizzeria Uno, Hooters, Outback.
CT - out of curiosity, how exactly did you end up in India? I don’t think you’ve posted that story.
Tony Romas, In N Out
I got an offer I couldn’t refuse. I’ll tell you over a bottle of teachers whiskey sometime.
the amazing thread jacking is awesome I have to agree. Only on this forum can you have online dating advice morph >> job market lament >> a diatribe on imperialism and its lasting effects. WOW
back to my topic however- I paid up and got to peak at the emails. Much more promising stuff in there. Replied to 3 and also emailed 2 people you did not reach out to me. Now I get to sit back and wait? I told one I thought we should get married and have babies (too forward?)
I guess this is ego crushing step #2 - seeing if those 2 others actually reply. Or if they will simply hit delelte never to be hear from again… sigh…
I also got plenty more comic relief. Its not that I’m judgemental - I promise. Its just freaking hilarious what some ppl put on there.
Yes, it is fun to look at other people’s profiles.
You might also want to look at other womens’ profiles, just to get a sense of what your competition is saying and how they present themselves. It can be eye-opening (both good and bad).
Good luck!
Kankan, what’s your nationality?
Huh…so was this like you being funny or a normal line?
Don’t get too hung up on who responds and who doesn’t. Definitely don’t over analyze early in the game. I just copy past quick form intros (Hey, I couldn’t help but notice you’ve got a great smile, seems like we’ve got a lot in common, would love to hear more about you.) and spam any matches that look relatively attractive. I don’t even remember who I sent it too, that way there’s no rejection. If they respond and a good enough number do, then I’m like ok, there’s mutual interest and I actually read the profile and send a legit response back if I’m still interested. I’d feel bad, but most girls ask me obvious quesitons that were in my profile, and admit to not reading much of it. So, I’ve found just keep the intro short because either they’re into you and they’ll laugh at anything you say, or they’re not, and it won’t matter what you said. Although as a girl, you may have to screen more thoroughly to combat high volume.
I’ve contemplating adding a “neg” to the form letter after the part about the smile to boost my response rate. something like “You’ve got a nice smile hiding under that mustache!”
I had a girl talk about marriage and what I was looking for on a first date after she told me she married a guy 15 years older when she was 23 and got divorced two years later. Some bishes never learn.
It was a joke. Thats what sux about this. I’m pretty sarcasic and have a hard time supressing it- it may not always be recognized however.
in this specific scenario the person who emailed me and mentioned some commanalities from my profile- ethnic background, reliion… pretty broad… but he had 2 VERY specific things in his profile that clicked with me. He had a picture of a unusual breed of dog that I had growing up. He also mentioned planning a trip to a city (that is not a obvious destination) and I’ve actually lived there.
so i thought it was funny to respond with a crazy girl "OMG no way!!! its meant ot be…we totally like have to have babies!! " … followed with normal chatter.
I don’t like feeling like I’m covering up my personality so I’m just gonna let it flow.
Oh KanKan.
