Reasons to hate NYC

  1. The real estate is ridiculously expensive 2) Making 6 figures but living in a 300 square foot studio 3) Street preachers…yes, I know Brittany Spears is the anti-Christ. 4) The people who hand out advertisements and act like it’s a personal insult if you don’t take their piece of paper. 5) Panhandlers on the subway giving their annoying speeches 6) The dirty people on the subway 7) Being stuck in the subway with the chronic coughers who don’t cover their mouths because they are afraid to get the virus they already have on their hands, and would rather everyone else get their disease. 9) People who take strollers onto subway cars during rush hour 10) Tax drivers 11) People who honk because the car in front of them is waiting for a red light 12) Getting stuck outside without an umbrella and having to buy a cheap one from Duane Reede that is so poorly made the water goes through the fabric and breaks after 5 uses. 13) Loudness, everywhere 14) Pollution. Garbage everywhere 15) “Rent controlled apartments” that increase my rent 30% because of their existence 16) Trash 17) Dogs urinating and shitting on the sidewalk 18) Stepping in dog urine and/or shit with my dress shoes 19) The constant smell of urine and shit from the dogs, vagabonds, and inebriated clubbers stuck without a public toilet 20) The constant smell of trash 21) Having to walk everywhere 22) The filthy toxic waste in the subways 23) MTA employees who strike because they only make $80K per year without a high school diploma 24) Rude people 25) Smelly people 26) Ugly dirty stupid loud rude people everywhere like RATS 27) Rats 28) High taxes to support ugly dirty stupid loud rude people 29) The real estate is ridiculously expensive 30) The real estate is ridiculously expensive

Tourists?

Paying tourist prices for everything

^disagree. Go to Chinatown, that is where I do my fruits and vegetables shopping. Quality produce at prices that you can’t even get if you shopped on a farm.

When I was in Chinatown recently I was almost afraid to buy the produce because it was so cheap by NYC standards.

Chinatown in Washington, D.C. is pretty much a rich white kid’s paradise. New York must have a real Chinatown.

Chinatown might be cheap but in every other way it is like a hyperNYC of cesspoolness. Ruder Dirtier Louder Uglier Smellier More tourists More crowded Dirtier subway more trash

Doesn’t this profile fit almost all crowded cities? I have not been to NYC, but Mumbai fits the description so well albeit with additional 100 qualifiers and not many of them nice either.

I grew up in one of America’s largest cities and I have lived in a few other large cities. Nothing else (in America) approaches NYC in terms of the massive throng of people and the cost of living. 20 million people in a pretty small area that is confined to one side by an ocean and inconveniently split up by waterways.

I was in india for a month once…terrible experience. worse than NYC, obviously, by a factor of 1000. what a morally and environmentally corrosive atmosphere. leaving india was like escaping from prison.

The only way to fix NYC would be to raze it to the ground first and start over.

Well, I would not go that far. Also, even if NYC or Mumbai has all these issues, I am not sure if the inhabitants of these cities feel the same. Don’t you feel that these places are more alive? Don’t you feel more part of the society and humanity in these places rather than in a quiet and clean place where only place where people interact is the traffic? Each time I visit India, it feels like that place is so alive. The interaction is at a lot deeper human level there than here. Fake smiles and hi/hello sound so hollow after that.

Buddham that is a great point but I see it differently. I feel more connected to those around me when I’m in a smaller environment. In big cities I just feel like everyone is a nameless face. When I’m in a big city, I see a million people but actually know 10. When I’m in a smaller community I see 1000 but know 100. I guess its different for everyone. BTW Markbot: Did you ever see the movie Seven? Your post sounded a lot like the Serial Killer’s diary.
