Regional Differences

I studied abroad in Europe during college and noted a lot of differences between how europeans write numbers versus Americans. For example, in Europe (ex. Britain), One billion (American) is a thousand million (European) and one trillion (American) is actually (one Billion). Also, Europeans tend to make their number one with a upswing (serif) which can cause them to be confused with sevens and thus their sevens have a line through the middle. Europeans use a decimal comma or decimal apostrophy and points to seperate thousands while Americans and Brits use the decimal point and commas to space the thousands. I am sure the list goes on. I could see how this could cause some confusion for a global exam. Has any one had to change the way they write for the exams?
