Can REITs be structured as a closed-end investment company? I’ve never heard of a REIT being structured as a closed-end investment company but I have heard of closed-end funds, business development corporations and registered hedge funds being registered as such. Any clarity on this issue would be much appreciated.

Yes they are closed end. Index funds are typically ETFs or open ended funds.

My friend works for an REIT which is closed ended.
