Just received a call from a prospective employer, they will not provide relocation assistance but agreed to pay a cash amount for relocation. How much would relocation say from Houston to NY cost? Is 5k too low?
Depends on if you’ll need temp housing when you get there, and if you own vs rent now. You should get at least $10K.
Does it matter? Ask for as much as you can without them thinking you’re a dick. I’m assuming that you’re not using this paltry sum as a factor in whether or not to accept the offer.
Keep in mind any amount you ask for is pretax. When I relocated from Atlanta to Cincinnati, the amount I received was $5k and this was about 4 years ago. I’d definitely ask for more as a move to NYC is expensive as compared to Midwest.
Maybe get a quote from a mover?
when i moved from michigan to NY my employer did the same, gave me a flat $5k. I rented a UHaul and did it myself, then used the excess to pay the security deposit on an apt I had for the first few months.
Thanks. I will be renting an apartment in NY and am thinking of asking for more…around 8k, will let you know if negotiation is successful.
First, congratulations. Companies typically will offer you cash or hire a packer-mover-unpacker for you. The 5K will barely cover your ‘moving’ costs - shipping your stuff to NY Not sure if you are transporting a vehicle as well but that aint cheap (especially if you have a fancy one). Some companies pay for 2-4 weeks of temporary housing as well. These perks have evaporated in the recessionary environment we’re in but I see no harm in asking. Good luck.
Got it raised to 10k…looks decent now. cfaatsb, you’re right…its so hard to negotiate these days, I was told that they interviewed 25 people and had like thousand applications…have no other alternative except to believe them.
What sort of job is this, if I may ask?
I told my employer that I was willing to for go relo costs to putmyself on a level playing field with local applicants. I burned through maybe 2k moving from Miami to Atl. I rented a Uhaul and rented a trailer for my car (put the moto in the uhaul). The most expensive part was eating out for every meal for 3 weeks while I was looking for a place (some really delusional owners in Miami who think they can get crazy $$). Granted I don’t really have that many belongings and I stayed a friends place while I was looking, I also bought about 2k of furniture since i’ve been here so 5k will indeed barely cover your needs.

Sweet. Sounds like a good opportunity. I’m sure you’ll like NY (though you probably won’t like the cost of living compared to Houston).
