S666 - What’s your opnion on whether the FRM is general enough to be valuable in a CFO type role at a non-financial institution business? I’m writing CFA L3 in June and am considering either a valuations designation or the FRM. Which do you think would be more valuable knowledge?
I would agree with the above sentiments…I think the FRM designation holds little value for a pure CFO role. The only subject matter directly related to that role would possibly be the management and hedging of currency exposures from an business activity/accounting perspective (that is a very small part of the overall curriculum).
I would suggest a more accountancy based qualification would be most useful for a CFO role.
I am a derivatives trader and hence, alas I have little valuable insight to add in terms of anything accountancy related.
Thanks for the feedback guys - sounds like FRM isn’t a worthwhile investment outside of the context of actual risk management. I am a CA/CPA (Canada) so I have the accounting/FRA covered - trying to figure out what else I can do before shutting down the ‘schooling’ train and purely focusing on career progression.
That’s what I’m thinking. If you pass L3 you are exempt from doing the two electives, so you only have to do the four valuation courses and might be able to get it done in 8 months (2 courses / semester).
