I get that. I’m just dumbfounded by how Te’o is doing such a poor job of covering his ass. It’s pretty obvious this Tuiasosopo dude is Lennay. So why, after Deadspin has made it clear there is no woman, is Te’o compounding his lies by saying in his press release that he talked to her?
At first I didn’t care about this story and was irked it was on ESPN and sports radio non-stop. But now I’m pretty fascinated. Sounds like Te’o has some serious mental health problems. Pathological liars are bizarre people. At this point the best case scenario for Te’o is if he is gay and he comes out that he’s in a relationship with Tuiasosopo. They then created Lennay as a front to Te’o could keep his locker room cred. Then Te’o could turn the tables and make sexuality and football the issue.
But, that’s probably not going to happen. Instead Te’o will go down as a nutcase. Depending on his level of crazy, his draft stock tumbles. If he’s totally insane, teams may not even bother.
So I guess it’s safe to assume that the star football player of the top college football program (at least until Alabama showed everyone what’s up) must not like to consummate his relationships with females?? Everything points to gay, which is perfectly fine (except in the football universe).
So apparently, if he were gay, it could be that he invented her as a distraction, then realized it was becoming obvious when she was never around and killed off the character. Which is fine I guess, but he could have obviously just said they broke up and chose to go the more dramatic route in this hypothetical and got caught up in it. I mean, I’m not saying it’s not a plausible story, just trying to reason through this somewhat dumbfounding chain of logic.
Maybe he can “sack” Jeff Garcia.

So there’s an update:
Apparently Manti is now admitting that he embellished part of the story. He told his dad that he was meeting his girlfriend, but never actually did. That’s why Dad told the press that they had met.
And some people came up to him a couple days before the National Championship and talked to him about the hoax. He says that affected his performance in the game.
So now he gets the benefit of having it both ways. If ND wins, he can say he “played through the pain of knowing”. And if Bama wins, it “adversely affected his performance.”
I still think he was in on it.
What I don’t understand is why he spent so much time and energy coming up with this hoax. Almost every other player with first round draft pick potential gets noticed, including those that don’t go to as visible a school as Notre Dame or as unusual a story as Manti’s. If I were him, Mormon upbringing aside, I’m certain I’d be spending my free time chasing real tail rather than making up story about a fictitious one.
