I wanted to find out from especially those who took the June 2013 exam. Did the schweser notes and videos cover all the necessary material for the exam? From a range of 1 to 10 how helpful was it in preparing for the exam?
or should I just read the entire curriculum ?
I have taken L3, and I’m waiting on results (but I’m very confident that I passed).
I used only Schweser for all 3 Levels. I felt like it was more than enough to learn what you need to pass. No, it does NOT cover everything. There will still be a few things that it doesn’t cover, but that’s the beauty of it. It cuts out all of the “fluff” that has an extremely remote possibility of being on the exam, but still gives you everything you need to know to pass.
To add to Greenman72’s post, I think a lot also depends on the person’s background.
I have a Comp Sci background from college, and I found that I had to read the curriculum in order to be comfortable with the material (except for Quant – that I thought Schweser was enough for me). If I had a background in Finance or Accounting, I would have probably been fine with just the Schweser notes.
I definitely don’t regret putting in the time into reading the curriculum, since I feel that I gained a deeper and more detailed understanding of the subjects, and I would recommend that people that don’t come from finance (or related) background from college do the same. Of course, as a disclaimer, I’m saying this without knowing whether I passed Level 1 – but just offering you my opinion in addition to what Greenman said above.
^^+1
came from an Engineering background with a bit of FI analyst experience. Used Schweser and supplimented with CFAI where necessary.
I still did all the q’s from Schweser and CFAI books before the exam.
Schweser:
Notes are a good overview
Video is great if you have Marc Lefebvre (he will highlight what problems, blue boxes and white text examples from CFAI are worth looking at; he also points out new sections and new problems in the curriculum vs. the last edition)
Final video review was pretty useless - though, if it was Lefebvre, it would have been better
Go through all the exams you can find in detail - I don’t understand how people didn’t realize that a) there were past exams available on the CFAI website b) you could grab 2007 to 2012 (not just the last three years) of practice exams
Also, I would save Ethics for the end of your studies. And for Level 1 - 2 attack and make sure you know cold (and perhaps leave for the last review) the topic areas that have the largest weights.
