Series 7 & 66

Hi Guys,

Has anyone sat the Series 7 and 66 examinations?

I am looking at completing these in the next month so wanted to ask you about study techniques, question books, online courses etc.

I am a CFA charterholder but have very little understanding of US regulations having never worked in the US.

Look forward to hearing from you

Yeah, I took both of those. I found the 66 harder than the 7 but I’m in the minority. Plus that was a long time ago so I’m not sure how things have changed since. Many of our new hires still have to get their 7 though, so I watch them go through it. Most overstudy for it. They read the books, take an online (or in person) class, and then spend several weeks taking practice exams until they’re consistently scoring in the 90s.

I think I was studying for L1 when I took both exams and it definitely helped for the 7, not so much for the 66. For each exam I studied for 2-3 hours a day for about 3 weeks. Passed easily. You’ll likely struggle more with the 66 as there’s a ton of regulatory info in there. May want to give yourself more time for that one.

Either way, if you’ve passed all three CFA exams, you know how to study and take tests which are really the most important things. It amazes me how many smart people fail licensing exams because they don’t know how to prep for a test…oh well. Good luck.

same - though mine are expired - 66 is def tougher just because it’s regulation based. I echo stl, since you passed all three i would venture to say you should breeze by both

Don’t take the 66. Take the 63.

63 + 65 = 66, and every single state offers an exemption for the 65 to CFA Charterholders.

Damn helpful comment right here. Have an imaginary upvote.

Thanks for your comments all.

Greenman72 - that is massive. Series 7 and 63 it is then.

I will probably do the usual which is just get stuck into a question bank and learn as you go. Any good question banks out there that anyone can recommend?

Normally, your job gives you the STC preparation material, which is enough to pass. If not, you can use the best selling guides for either exam from Amazon. These exams are small in scope, so you shouldn’t have to spend that long preparing for either of them.

Just skim the material and take some practice exams, looking up anything you don’t know or can’t remember from your skim. You probably need two-ish weeks coming fresh off CFA.
