Many of us just have a lot of spare time at the office. Those out there labouring don’t have time to research random nonsense as they actually have to add value and create wealth.
Geo, what are you basing your opinion on? You definitely have never flown an airliner. Maybe, maybe not. Dispatch probably finalized the flight plan a couple hours before the flight. If the fuel load still allowed a legal landing weight, when the weight and balance numbers were returned “ok” and the V speeds were communicated, dispatch is not stopping that flight. Company might query the captain after landing asking what the deal was but many extra hours of fuel is not uncommon. Many extra hours might even be required by regulation. And probably not applicable to most long haul flights, but airlines do tanker fuel depending on the relative cost of fuel at the city pairs. The longer the flight, the larger the price difference has to be to make it economical, but I’m sure any financier would have already thought of that.
I don’t think finance people are more intelligent than other people with similar educational backgrounds. However, it is probably true that finance people make better decisions in many practical matters, particularly those related to money. Physics professors probably do not spend much time thinking about personal finances. Thus, they might make less practical financial decisions despite their intelligence.
In addition, in finance, the appearance of intelligence often matters as much as actual intelligence. So perhaps good presentation makes people seem more intelligent than they actually are.
I’m not an expert, I’m just going based on what I’ve read. I’m not here to certify myself as an expert in aviation. If you want an expert opinion in aviation, I suggest an aviation forum rather than a place where a bunch of finance people are shooting the sh1t. I don’t know why people come around and start bitching about people shooting the sh1t as though anyone on the earth that opens their mouth should be an expert. You should definitely go tell Greeman that he’s not an NFL GM so he has no valid thoughts on Cowboy’s FA signings or since most of us haven’t sold a car before none of us should opinion on the best car threads.
In any event this is a moot point since the plane did not have extra fuel onboard.
The difference is that Greenman and the best car posters are sharing their observations and experience.
Given that you were refuting zerobonus with nothing but bogus hearsay presented as objective fact, I thought I’d call you out as I would in person. Sorry to tap on your bubble. Carry on. Everybody still gets a trophy.
Oh, modern airliners do not have flight engineers or even flight engineer stations. And remember, the two people up front still do mostly control your fate, for now.
Well I’m hoping no one thought I was an aviation expert as I’d be questioning their judgement if they did. I was stating my opinion on how things would shake out. I find it extremely unlikely, and still do, that no one would think twice if a pilot loaded up 30-40% more fuel than needed. I’ll stand by that statement as being reasonable.
And the flight engineer piece… yeah, I was confused by this as well. Early reports indicated a flight engineer was being investigated. Turned out it was a passenger. My understanding that this was mostly phased out as well in modern aircraft. Turns out that’s right. That dude was just an engineer.
Let’s just move on here. I’m not an expert. No one should take my statements in this thread as a statement of fact. Just opinion and conjecture. My apologies if I came across sounding like I was some pro-aviator.
So it turns out even Australia has no clue. This thing is getting weirder by the day.
Now everyone will keep quiet until they actually find the plane just to avoid international embarassment. I can’t believe Australia would put their reputation on the line by claiming to have spotted the wreck, something is amiss.
Why is this still news? It’s pretty clear what happened. Malaysia’s equivalent of the FAA is probably awful and none of their equipment works. They don’t want people to know this, so they aren’t going to disclose that they gps transponder and black box were never functional. Seas in that part of the world are famous for undercurrents and it’s a large area. Not really surprising that they can’t find it.
^ It’s not that they have no clue. It’s a huge area, thousands of miles from shore. The search aircraft can only spend a couple hours searching before fuel limitations send them back. Objects float at sea in currents. Where the satellites picked up these two objects is not where those objects are today. It’s complex. It may take some time but it will be found.
If the black box isn’t functional. then I’d suggest that’s likely a American/Boeing issue rather than a Malaysia issue. It’s probably working. It’s just like trying to locate a box somewhere in Texas with 4 aircraft that can only spend 2 hours searching per day.
You make a good point about the appearance of intelligence.
I think Finance peeps seem to know a bit about everything because we read the news religiously. I don’t think there are many other professions (bar politics maybe, and media) that require you to be up-to-date with what is happening macro and micro. I’m sure most of you here are subscribed to several news outlets and reading/watching the news is one of the first things you do when you wake up. This is an interesting topic that should probably be in another thread tbh.
