Sponsorship Statement & Work Experience

Can someone please explain to me what the two sponsors do? Do they verify my work experience that I apply to the CFA Institute? Also, does the institute accept/reject my work experience only after I have picked two of my sponsors or can I apply to have my work experience accepted and then pick two of my sponsors? Any help on this topic is really appreciated.

One of your sponsors is supposed to be your supervisor. He will check a box that says whether or not your current work counts towards your experience. Your other sponsor is a CFA charterholder that does little more than says he knows your name. You can get any random CFA charterholder to be a sponsor. I believe the CFAI institute waits until they have the paper work from your sponsors before they will accept/reject your experience. i.e. they need a completed application before they will review your application.

This is very helpful…thanks!!

What about if you are not working and you left your previous job because of your supervisor. Is it ok to put forward someone else who is senior like a global advisor who you worked very closely with For the other sponsor, I think the person has to be from your local centre, not any old Chaterholder. Confirm?

From other threads, that makes it sound a lot easier than it is with respect to getting work experienced approved. I think it’s a bit more intensive than getting two people to check a box and vouch that you exist. Can anyone who has been through the process confirm/deny? Also have a couple questions to add. For those who have had work experience denied, what did you do next? The CFAI site says “Once you submit your application, you cannot subsequently update the work experience attached to that application.” I guess it makes sense that you can’t adjust the wording of your job until it fits their requirements, but I didn’t think it was one & done like that. For those who have had partial work experience approved, do you have to be a member of both the CFAI and a local society the entire time after you apply? I’d like to apply now to make sure my job counts as relevant work experience, but don’t want to pay $500/year in dues for the next 3 years for a newsletter and a few lunches when I can’t even use the 3 letters after my name.

They count each time you submit your experience as one application which is why you can’t update the experience attached to the application. Once you’ve been denied you can change the wording of your experience and submit a “new” application. You won’t need to resubmit your sponsor forms, just change the wording on your experience and submit a “new” application. You don’t have to pay the CFAI dues unless you want to be an affiliate member or are a regular member, so if you have 24 months experience and need another 24 you can wait until you have all 48 before paying the dues to become a regular member.

Thanks Jonny that helps. Kinda leaves you without a choice in terms of dues to CFAI if you want to make sure your experience is relevant before logging 48 months and realizing it was all for naught.

I believe they tell you whether your experience is relevant before they send you the bill. So you don’t have to pay the dues until you’re a regular member and going to be a CFA charter holder.
