Starbucks

I remember back in July, 2008, Starbucks annunced that they are closing about 1000 stores nationwide. Few of my local stores are also on the list. However, have anybody noticed any ACTUAL store closing? Those stores in my area are still open.

I haven’t seen any of 5-6 places I walk by on a normal basis close, but they are in pretty high traffic areas as I live in the city. Maybe they are closing the ones in the small towns?

You are probably in an urban area so I wouldn’t expect to see many close. From what I understand, they are closing many stores in rural or suburban parts of the country where they expanded too far too soon.

Out of 83 stores in Australia, they have closed something like 75. In a city of 5 million people like Sydney, there is only one store.

Many in developing areas, like Newark, NJ, closed.

Some of the Starbucks here in Atlanta have closed. They were always busy as hell when I was in them. They had petition sheets for people to sign in order to stymie the close but I guess it didn’t work out.

Haven’t noticed any closing in downtown Calgary.

I live in North Metro area of Atlanta, the 3 stores in my area are still open (they were set to close), I guess their petition worked.

They should close the one in TD Square (downtown calgary) based on the number of fruit flies living in the pastry display case.

i think they’ll keep the heavy volume and supergrowth city locations. i live in a town of 100k people, but we have RIM, Manulife, Sunlife and two universities so I’d assume our two Starbucks are staying.

Nope, I’ve actually seen a couple new stores.

When they made that announcement they said they would shut down one in Hanover, PA near my parent’s hometown and it’s still up and running.

Around that same time, didn’t they also announce they were going to axe the breakfast menu?

I have about 5 where I live (downtown Chicago). All have reduced hours to cut costs while others have reduced staff. Some used to be open till 10.30P and now close at 8P.

All of the stores that I frequent in and around Dallas are still up and running.

i counted 17 here. all open.

I saw that they were not going to serve decaf after lunch in (I think all of) the stores to cut down on costs.

( GTA suburb ) The new one is a drive thru , the first one I’ve seen .

There are a buttload in Shanghai that get like three customers per day…the Chinese can’t afford a freakin’ $4 cup of coffee and besides Coffee Bean is just as good and offers free wifi. Maybe they ought to close some of those! Here in Seattle I don’t notice any closing, still one per block.

Vancouver, Canada. At least one per block. Busy downtown areas have Starbucks locations across the street from one another - both full. There are at least 20 locations in the city and lineups at every one of them. It is ridiculous. A lineup of 15 people at Starbucks while coffee shops next door (e.g. Blenz) have zero lineup. Van is full of Starbucks junkies, so they just keep opening new locations here.
