Starting a new Reading.. what's your routine?

Suppose you’re starting a new reading… what’s your routine?

Mine:

Step 1: Read CFAI Summary

Step 2: Read Schweser Summary (the Key Points section)

Step 3: Read CFAI Text on the reading (and take notes.)

Step 4: Read Schweser Text on the reading (and take notes.)

Step 5: Read CFAI Summary (again)

Step 6: Read Schweser Summary (again)

Step 7: Do CFAI EOC problems.

Step 8: Do Schweser EOC problems.

Step 9: Go back to step 1 (for next section).

holy crap!

Overkill.

surprise

  1. Schweser Video (maybe flip through CFAI reading at the same time)
  • a few days later -
  1. Schweser Notes, highlight parts that I don’t get

  2. Schweser Concepts checkers

  • 1 or 2 months later -
  1. Reread Schweser, pay attention to the highlighted parts in particular, take notes of those parts that I still don’t have a clue about -> will be used for rote memorisation

  2. CFAI end of chapter questions

God bless you, man.

Mine goes:

  • read CFAI text

  • constantly check the operative words in the LOS’ because I’m hoping THAT formula doesn’t need to be committed to memory

  • skim Schweser for the corresponding readings

  • Do CFAI EOC’s

  • Dominate Schweser concept checkers (because compared to the PG-13/R-Rated CFAI EOC’s and the blue boxes, Schweser is like Saturday morning cartoon, in my opinion)

  • Go through 60-100 QBank questions on just that reading

  • Finally, go through 60 QBank questions on all readings i’ve done so far

  • ***REPEAT***

I don’t use my QBank reviews each week as a benchmark but they are helpful to refresh the little things I may have overlooked or just plain forgotten since reading.

Read CFAI text & take lots of notes, type out CFAI summary, reference schweser/do schweser problems, do EOC’s, watch schweser video.

I also have been scanning my handwritten notes to PDF and then reviewing them on my iPad - totally awesome and totally legit. No bringing huge binders of notes anywhere!

Read through schweser and make notes

Skim through CFAI material side by side to make sure nothing is missed out

schweser concept checkers… CFAI EOCs

NEXT!

Diligent preparation here. My routine is not nearly as intense:

  1. Watch Elan video and follow along in the notes

  2. Do Elan Practice questions.

  3. Do CFAI ECO questions.

Really minimal, but it worked for me in L1.

  1. Go for class at local institute offering CFA coaching.

  2. Come back and read the same topic from schweser notes

  3. Read from CFA curriculum books for parts i didnt understand

  4. Do schweser concept checkers.

  5. Do CFAI EOC’s

  6. After completing the relevant study session practice 60 questions(advanced+intermediate) from Qbank for respective SS

I’m with gharnish

I watch the 7City videos which are brilliant

Test myself on a set of questions to identify the tough areas

Go back and read the notes for the stuff I struggled with

Regularly go back to each section and do questions to refresh

Finish of with 1 month of hardcore questions!

1.Read Schweser at a desk with no distractions.

2.Review what you just read at a bar, while drinking, with many distractions.

3.Go through logic and formula in head all the time so you look demented to passerbys

Whenever I smell whiskey, usually Jameson, a lot of the Portfolio Management Equations as well as Residual Income/DCF automatically pop into my head these days. And a lot from Level I last year. So it sticks with me.

You must not have a job

sure you wanna condition your mind to the smell of whisky for exam purpose? you are more likely to pass the exam in a bar than in proper exam halls…unless there is a drunken hobo sitting next to you!
