Stop loss order outstanding even after stock sale?

Hey I’d just like to know what the usual industry practice is regarding the cancellation of stop loss orders. We had a stop loss order placed on a certain stock. We sold the stock earlier this month but the stop loss order was executed last week. So we now have a short position on the stock. Unfortunately, the stock went up a bit. Should the broker bear an y responsibility for not automatically canceling the stop loss or at least asking if we wanted it?
