i don’t think we should count on everyone to know how long it will take emergency services to arrive and if the call is futile or not. but we should be able to count on people’s ability to spot danger, which they clearly did, and report that danger if they have the means. to be fair, if they didn’t taunt him and/or if they didn’t have cellphones, charging them would be much more difficult from a moral point of view. it’s not like this is an extremely heinous crime. its just that we should expect more from people who choose to live in our society. laws help people behave in a specific way when the moral guidelines are less clear.
