********MINOR SPOILERS BELOW*********
Wonder Woman - 8/10. Visuals were excellent, Gal was beautiful but her character was pretty annoying. It plays to that naive, fresh off the boat character but if she didn’t have magical powers and seemingly bulletproof everything, she would have gotten everyone killed. That’s fine given in BvS she was much more mature and not as bumbling. Fine debut movie but over-hyped IMO. And what the hell, the Kaisermarines get killed on the beach with a battleship behind it, and nothing happens to Themeicysuzesus? You lose 50 men and you don’t find out why? Given how susceptible her people are to bullets, I would have expected the naval bombardment to end her civilization for once and for all. Not to mention that the Germans in the Mediterranean at that point of the war is highly unlikely.
Alien: Covenant - 7.0/10. As a follow up to Prometheus, this had a lot of potential. I enjoyed Prometheus, though flawed, it set the foundations for some big reveals in subsequent films. This movie has some big reveals too, but to new questions that could have waited. The big issue I have with this film is how they concluded Prometheus, with David surviving and Shaw getting the Newt treatment. They really should have given Rapace and Fassbender a Prometheus 2 instead of a new set of cannon fodder. Fassbender makes this film worth watching but two of him does not double the score. The high points of the film are when the two androids are conversing and David’s character development between the films is revealed, also the final scene. Fassbender is carrying this franchise on his shoulders, but Rapace’s loss will be felt in the universe for a long time.
***HUGE SPOILER****
If the aliens were bred by David approx 2100AD, how could they appear in Predator 2 on the Predator’s trophy wall? It doesn’t make sense. This also completely contradicts the AvP franchise and how Aliens were bred for sport since time immemorable.
Hacksaw Ridge - 7.5/10. Decent war flick given the protagonist doesn’t carry a weapon. “The Pacific”-like visuals, decent character development and extraordinary true story. I think they did it justice. Not a must see if you’re well versed in the genre but not time wasted either if you’re a fan of WW2, and the Pacific theatre of operations.
Nightwatch - 6/10. Older Russian flick from 2004… visuals good for it’s time, though the moscow backdrop is soviet era depressing. story line was like a weak Constantine… maybe it’s eastern bloc theatre but if that was a critical success then… yeah. It could be all lost in translation due to subtitles but it was a chore to watch, the story was mildly interesting and climax barely used any of the elements built up in the rest of the film. it’s one of those films that have potential but you keep watching and it keeps disappointing and never gets better.
haha very nice el macca. whats your favorite movie in netflix or amazon right now, id like a review of that.
catch me if you can

Netflix Canada is getting better but still a bit slow on the uptick on selection. I hesitate to rank them in terms of best I’ve seen because the selection is always changing and frankly I don’t watch it all that often (recently got some more free time on my hands from work school etc). It’s easier to just write about things I’ve recently seen
Hell Boy: 8/10. It’s an older code but it checks out. I last saw this about 10 years ago but still it is hard to believe this comic book movie is almost 15 years old. Guillermo Del Toro did a great job acquiring the budget and talent for this flick. Ron Perlman is the right amount of gruff and likable and Niles voices Abe, his curious aquatic sidekick. The set design and props were lovingly crafted and the film doesn’t really rely on CGI to fill in the blanks. Instead, CGI is sparingly used and every effect looks believable, you have to keep reminding yourself this film is 15 years old. I’ve seen films made in the last 5 years with bigger budgets that look worse than this. The story is tight for the most part, but weak on the romantic side, the latter being the only thing that drags the films pacing. The main villains are particularly interesting, being a russian ‘shaman’, nazi occultists, the mechanical man, and hell hounds. Theres more than enough to work with and the movie does well to introduce the titular character for sequels. Overall the film is very enjoyable to watch for fans of the fantasy genre and visually appealing. Its no surprise that even with a fair box office return, the DVD sold very, very well. Recommended if you haven’t seen it already.
It seems netflix is far more concerned with creating original content then actually maintaining a good library of movies and TV shows these days.
Anybody heard of this? Trailer for “Blade Runner 2049”.
Not sure how excited I’m supposed to be for this.
i just saw war machine and was very much disappointed. could you give a recommendation of a solid flick. thx.
Anyone seen this movie? I watched Blade Runner 2019 over the weekend - it’s definitely an art sci fi film and I’m not surprised the sequel isn’t doing well in theatres. On the fence whether to watch it in the theatre or wait for BluRay. Any insights?
The original Blade Runner is really, really good. Not 10/10 good, but definitely a classic. And, one of only two movies I can think of that’s better than the book it’s based off of (Fight Club being the other).
I was supposed to see the new Blade Runner last weekend but life got in the way. Will likely see it this weekend. I’ve heard very good things.
I absolutely agree - but it’s not for everyone. I’ve seen it a few times over the past 10 years and I am always noticing new things and picking up new themes. Also contains one of my favourite scenes in cinema - oft quoted but never acknowledged. I have also seen positive reviews but not looked into details - I would go but in a bit of a time constraint this week. Please share your thoughts on the movie afterwards. Tank.
i recently saw two of the most horrible movies. the dark tower and flatliners. pleaes do not watch these shit movies
Shawshank Redemption, anyone?
edit - I’m specifically biting my tongue on LOTR on this one, because that will start a war between me and Sweep.
#GlorfindelNotLivTyler!
I’ve been trying to persuade the wife to go to see Bladerunner but she’s not biting. even the lure of Gosling isn’t doing it for her.
I watched the 1st LOTR on a flight from Australia to the UK. even with 24 hours to kill and loaded up i found it boring as fu ck
Jesus Christ Eru Ilúvatar that made me mad. One of the most badass Eldar of all time and he gets the boot so Arwen (who basically does nothing in the books) can sneak up on Aragon, a dude that literally can’t be snuck up on.
TRIGGERED!!!
And, Greenie, I haven’t read the Shawshank Redemption so I can’t comment on that, but the movie is about as good as movies get so the book would have to be one of the best ever.
Dude was literally a hero in the First Age, fought a fire drake, killed a Balrog 1v1, died, and was chosen to be reborn by the God himself… to be replaced by some chick that somehow misspoke a made up language. #NeverForget
This musta been in the Silmarillion. That’s the one I didn’t read. I’ll wait for the movie to come out. (Oh wait–it won’t, because Christopher Tolkien owns the rights to it, and he refuses to let it be made into a movie.)
And @Sweep - it’s actually a “novella”. You could read it in a couple of hours, probably.
