Top Cities for Investment Careers

Waterloo Canada. How can you go wrong. If you can get a job here. Smartest city in the world, 2 years running. 1/3 of the population is hot blonde chicks, the other 2/3, smart asian girls. Living expenses are nothing. One of, if not the fastest growing community in Canada. RIM, SLF, MFC, DSA, OTC. Only problem is that I have to drive to Toronto at 6am to write the damn exams.

But, I’d have to say Toronto (and I don’t think I’m being biased) and Dubai have a lot of new opportunities.

I admit, im intrigued. Getting bored of the states anyhow. Dont mean to hijack the thread but any tips on finding opportunities abroad for an english-only speaking 23 year old? GenY

Calgary being an exception, but there are much more limited ops up here. Canada is a great place to work if you are in the energy industry, mining, IT (RIM) etc. For pure finance though, not so great.

Calgary is filled with cowboys if that’s what you like. It’s a very close-knit community and may be hard for outsiders to break in. Canada has no IT. All the good ITs have been bought out already. Mining if you don’t mind the prospect of working with juniors. We’ve got lots of those. O&G is good but you gotta be in Calgary.

True, alot of the Ottawa area software industry is gone, but I guess I just figured due to RIM there was still a big industry in the Waterloo area as mentioned above

Waterloo only has RIM and OpenText (not so big anymore). You can’t make a living covering only a few comapnies (that everyone is also covering).

I didn’t mean so much research, I meant careers or industries in general.

I am wondering how Memphis is so high.

I speak from having worked on the buyside for 6 years and now the sellside for a year…Memphis has a very large bond presence, for regionals, i.e. Vining Sparks, Morgan Keegan, FTN, Jefferies, Cantor, amongst others…These guys are the heart and soul for all banks in the south… SanFran is small, but has a decent buyside presence, i.e., barclays global and a couple other smaller shops…has some sellside opps - 7-10 are very interchangable / arguable. LA - TCW, PIMCO, WAMCO and Metwest - very large buyside presence…Boston has huge mutual fund presence, Mpls has huge money manager presence.

You forgot to mention the 74.32829% sausage fest there…

Waterloo is great if you are in university. For work… it sucks period! Unless you spend all your free time palying video games. And the girls there are not that hot.
