trump... so disappointing... such a failure. i had high hopes

Doesn’t the fact that transgender people are controversial in the military in the first place support the decision to not include them, due to the potential effect on morale of some soldiers? Hopefully, there will be some time in the future where transgenders are not regarded as controversial in society, like other minority groups (redheads, Jews, etc.). At this point, it will not be a problem to include them. In the mean time, there is a practical reason to support the ban to increase cohesiveness and thus efficacy, which where armed forces are concerned, should be equally if not more important than fairness or kindness. This is an organization whose primary purpose is to kill others before being killed themselves, after all.

He tweeted this discredited myth hours after people lost their lives in Barcelona. He really is shameless

“Study what General Pershing of the United States did to terrorists when caught. There was no more Radical Islamic Terror for 35 years!”

the guy plays like a seasoned veteran. this is unprecedented, how can it be?

According to my brother and what his fellow army officer have said…it doesn’t matter whether the guy your fighting with is gay, asian, black, trans, brown, or whatever. when bullets are flying and you’re emptying out building after building the only thing you’re concerned is can this guy really do his job when shit hits the fan and watch my arese? If the best shooter and the dude with the balls of steel happen to be gay, muslim, brown or whatever so be it. He can be on my team because I’d rather live and come home than die…You see, we all know racism exists in some form or another in all of us - some more and some less. Nowadays, you have lot more army officers of color - west point and rotc programs - and some of the men they lead may not like that at all…face it, there are some kids who barely graudated high school from N. Dakota or whereever who have never seen a minority in his life let alone his superior of color who orders him what to do…But all this dissapears when you go out to meet your real enemies. After one single encounter for most people, the bigotry and racism flies out the window. It is about you and the guy next to you.

Look this is pretty funny saying this on an AF forum, but it is one thing to talk trash, assume, ridicule fellow AF member while discussing politics and career but i cannot just sit back and watch when people assume and mock the armed forces. None of you and including myself know what that is like…Banning and hating and pointing fingers to one group of people - this is the ultimate divisive and breaks the camaraderie.

what a disgusting human being:

What %of the military personnel actually are in combat situations?

After reading my post that is the question that popped up in your head? Such a smart and thoughtful counter question there.

15%-20% of the Army…why does that matter? the fact is the very few who are in combat situations (those who truly put their lives on the line) will lose their camaraderie and cohesiveness… ohh but so what, very few % are in combat so it doesn’t matter to breakup and pin point and hate one single group and divide the armed forces?

I’m thinking it’s closer to 5%, max. In wartime. What I’m saying is that there are stronger arguments than the tired old “when the bullets start flying” one.

Is there any evidence to show currently serving transgender troops are a danger? I’ve seen nothing. Happy to think differently but the military themselves seems to have no issue with it, at least from what I’ve seen out of the Joint Chiefs of Staff back when this ridiculousness broke.

Like didn’t this ban come about because Trump was worried his wall wouldn’t get funded or something? I don’t think there was any reliable supporting evidence (shocker). And yet we go on these tangents about unit cohesion.

but when bullets do start flying it just got real and don’t matter who the person next to you is as long as he/she is good at shooting/killing/fighgint and perform best when under pressure. But when you start discriminating a sinlge group and plant hatred and an “ok” sign to discriminate that group…it only does harm than good…You do this in the corporate world and it creates hostile and uncooperative and divisive culture which may result in firing and missed deadlines…But in the military the deadline could be your life, collateral damage, your arm, your leg, etc…

Planting hate and giving an ok sign to discriminate is not why our ancestors dearly fought and gave their lives for…They fought to liberate the oppressed, for freedom and equality and democracy. But Trump our comander in chief did the following: oppress, marginalize a group, and discriminate.

Something like 40% of transgender people attempt suicide at some point in their life. I’ve known a great trans person so I’d not want to put all of them down, but I dont think its completely ridiculous to say that its a reasonable thing that could be used to judge a person as being mentally unhealthy. At the same time though, gen. mattis said he thinks theres no problem with them so I’d be willing to take his word for it.

Look the reason is because of people like you and trump who make their lives miserable, point fingers, give nasty looks, and discriminate…Stop all this and they will not be in your terms “mentally unhealthy”

While I agree with your sentiment, that’s not how mental health works.

please explain so I may learn something in the field of neurology, Doctor.

Okay, mental health disorders are chemical in nature. Being bipolar, schizophrenic, paranoid/delusional, etc. are medical problems. They don’t come about because people laugh at you. People being as s holes to other people with underlying mental health issues can certainly exasperate the problem, but you can’t bully someone into being bipolar, for example.

To the point that you two are debating, I have no idea what % of trans people have mental health issues. It would make sense that being confused and repressing so many strange feelings (strange - not in a bad way just weird for a kid that doesn’t know why the hell he/she feels so different) for so much of your life has to take its toll.

You’re right that people being dicks to the trans population definitely hurts them, but it’s not a root cause of mental health issues. Put another way, if everyone is suddenly nice to each other, we’d still have mental health disorders.

I would think that training, logistics, intelligence, and all kinds of support are 99% of the work in the military. But anyway, what I was saying is that even if there is just a chance that higher inclusiveness might affect military effectiveness, that could justify discrimination. The military is not like a normal organization. People who join are expected to give up many freedoms and even fair treatment that civilians take for granted. Even if it is good to promote social progress, the military is not the place to implement that. Instead, progress should happen in broader society and make its way into the military later.
