I think we really need to consider banning spoons for making people fat and killing them.

But if it wasn’t a spoon they’d just find another way. For example, the new trend with the kids is “sandwich”, which is a disturbing cocktail of cheesy meat and sauce with bread as the primary delivery method, although tortillas are coming with the Mexicans.

I can’t believe you’re dumb enough to equate this stuff tho. The ostensible purpose of opioids is pain relief, vehicles for transportation and spoons for smoking crack or doing that fun thing on your nose in restaurants. Guns have one purpose. And it’s to be fucking awesome. USA!!!

For the sake of the broader debate, the UK is seeing double digit rises in knife violence and leads Europe in violent crime and violent rapes. If we’re taking situations where a felon (banned from owning guns) has a gun and uses it to kill someone in a robbery the reality is he could just have easily been stabbed, etc.

That said, the situation in Spring Garden is tragic and sucks. Some people are just animals.

Anyway, I’ve been robbed at gunpoint many years ago in a different town. That is probably the closest I’ve come to death. If that guy had a knife, I’d probably have a much better chance of coming out alive for myriad reasons. It takes a lot more to kill someone with a knife and it is hard to do by accident. As you know, a handgun in an inexperienced person’s hands can easily go off without warning, especially in a high stress situation like a robbery. Honestly, that was what I was most focused on during the mugging: keeping my head out of the line of fire because that thing could go off at any time. If he had a knife I would have focused on whether he intended to use it, whether he was fast enough to catch me and whether he brought himself with range for me to disarm him. Guns, and handguns in particular, are just a much more potent weapon and in the hands of an amateur are much more likely to cause death and destruction.

Comparing a knife to a handgun is kind of like comparing heroin to fentanyl. Both are dangerous, but one can kill you far more easily. However, much like fentanyl, I realize that handguns are out there an available, so it is more a matter of how to manage the carnage.

In an untrained but determined persons hands the overwhelming evidence is that knives are at least as if not more dangerous within 10 feet. Ask an officer about the 21 foot rule sometime, essentially the body of work (and their training) shows that within 21 feet, the odds are equal between a knife wielding assailant and a trained officer with a holstered sidearm. Now obviously un-holstered this changes dramatically, but in close quarters the knife is still the more dangerous.

Less academically, a good friend of mine’s little brother was stabbed to death by another high school student in Camden with a short knife very quickly. It ultimately became a high profile race case because of a variety of factors. People often don’t understand how difficult it is to contain a knife wielding person as even if you grab the wrist they’ll pivot and cut your hand and wrist up and you’ll likely quickly lose your grip due to structural damage and slick blood. After that, once you get even a few punctures blood pressure falls to nearly zero throughout your body like a pneumatic system with a punctured brake line and you will black out.

I agree with some of what you’re saying and also agree that there’s an easier psychological barrier for an assailant to cross to pull the trigger, but in the UK you still Europe leading violent crime rates in most categories and prolific knife attacks. I’m sure banning guns would have a limiting effect, I’m just not sure it would be as drastic as people believe.

I am sure Officer Morton’s family is comforted that this meth dealer was able to defend himself.

Police went to Tammy Dee Widger’s home at 306 W. Grandriver Street on Tuesday night after a 911 call made 20 miles away mistakenly sent them there.

Widger answered the door and said there was no disturbance. She denied making a 911 call. Police went in to make sure no one was being harmed, authorities said.

Soon after, gunfire erupted and Officer Christopher Ryan Morton was killed. The suspected shooter, James Waters, also later was found dead.

I mean if you want to live an inconsistent life, go ahead and try. but if you want to strive for integrity, you may want to learn how to distinguish between legitimate use of tools vs illegitimate ones. If you want to throw out legitimate use of certain tools on one hand but throw out only illegitimate use of certain other tools, I’m sorry but you lack integrity. When enough people lose their integrity, it opens up the world for evil to enter.
