Use Schweser 2nd time around?

Hey all - I’m re-taking Level 2 this year. In 2010 I used Schweser and did all the CFAI EOC questions, but it wasn’t enough. Band 6. (I rocked Level 1 on first try in 2009). This year I was thinking of just doing the CFAI Texts but they are absolutely brutal and I don’t know if I have the strength. Thoughts? Have many people bought level 2 from schweser again a year later? Just frustrates me to spend another $400 when 95% of it is the same as last years…

I failed level 2 as a band 10’er. No reason to buy Schweser books again it’s a waste of money. Like you said it’s all the same except for some accounting from level 1. Go to the Fin Quiz website to see the changes. Use your old Schweser books and the new CFAI books to study… using the CFAI books of course for those added topics. I am going to do my best to go through the CFAI books this time and do all EOC questions, particularly in Equities. Last year I only used Schweser study notes, flash cards, videos, and practice tests. Hopefully I’ll absorb and retain a majority of the material being the second go at it.

I dont think its worth it either. I plan to use CFAI books this time around. At least for me schweser seemed ok for sections such as FI, Der, AI but not as helpful in the big 3 equities, FSA and ethics

yeah, will probably try my old books and go from there. hopefully it will be faster this time around. also, does anyone have the link to the Fin Quiz place where they state the differences in Level II between 2010 & 2011?

I actually registered here to ask this same question. I failed level II, band 10, in June after passing Level I in Dec. 09. Tough to cram all the material in in only a couple months, but I came close and only used the Schweser texts. Didn’t even open the CFAI books. After reading the posts, I think im going to try to use the CFAI texts, with specific focus on EOC questions, and refer to the old schweser notes perdiodically. IF i dont think this approach is working after a while, I may purchase the schweser notes in Nov-Dec.

I just passed L2…second try…I only read CFAI material and did every single EOC question.

CFAI texts and EOC are the only way to go…forget the 3rd party providers

What about doing the CFAI texts but do the Schweser q-bank. In particular all the Los Quiz ques, Reading Exams and Study Session Exams. Do you think those Schweser questions would be better than all the CFAI EOC

anyone know when Schweser is planning on sending out the books ? also i was thinking about doing the same as a couple people here, go through schweser notes entirely twice, and do EOC questions in CFAI. in addition do as many practice tests as possible, i have 6 kaplan ones and the 2 CFAI ones once they are released.

It goes alot faster than last year, since I already have notes on all the material, and have “been to the circus and seen the strings”. So far I agree with the above statement.

Hello, I personnaly think that knowing well what you find in the Schweser books is sufficient enough to be well prepared for the exam. Just try to know everything (which is a lot) and you will see that you will be well prepared. The problem is not to choose between Schweser or CFAI books, but more to be 100% prepared for the exam day. A lot of people are passing the three levels with Schweser or Stalla only, and it is not a question to be smarter. If you study hard with Schweser, I would be very surprised if you failed.

I would agree with Doji here. I’m new to this forum. I passed L1 in Dec 2009 and L2 in June 2010, and planning to take L3 next June. I used Schweser notes as primary reference material and read Curriculum only for those areas where I felt that Schweser hasn’t explained enough or skipped the concept altogether. In L2 u need to rely a lot on memory, first learn the concepts and then practice to see how to apply those concepts to the given problems. Although L2 candidates have ample amount of time at their disposal and they can easily manage to read CFAI curriculum, but without 2-3 revisions I doubt they would be able to recall the materail on exam day. In my case Schweser helped a lot in retention.

i am confused. a lot of the posts are saying L2 candidates still need to read CFAI curriculum? huh? I just start early, plan to go through the material at least 4 times, (more detailed study everytime) my sources: schwese Q bank first to get a grasp of the concepts, then will hit the notes, then do all the questions that i can get my hands on…

Do you still have a life? If you go through the material 4 times you should be more than fine. Use the CFAI if you get confused.

Do you still have a life? If you go > through the material 4 times you should be more > than fine. Use the CFAI if you get confused. well, 4 times just mean: 1: flip thru the concepts 2: flip thru the concepts plus do the questions on shweser Qbank 3: read shweser notes carefully and do all the EOC and concept checkers 4: do the practice exams and restudy the material that i feel weak on thats what i did for Lv1…

Its Schweser all the way, barring Ethics…CFAI text is maddening…It makes more sense to do it, but i know that i will give up mid way…so schweser…Hopefully a pass next year.
