Hi, first time poster here. I’m scheduled to take the June 2011 level 1 exam. Now, I understand for raw coverage speed it’s more efficient to just read the notes. But I find that it’s much harder for me to focus just reading the text. I prefer to watch the videos and have been doing that so far. I was wondering whether they go indepth enough such that the videos alone could teach the material? Ideally, I’d like to approach this like a college class. Watch the lectures, and then try the homework (ie: test bank questions). I’m wondering whether anyone else has tried this approach or can comment to its effectiveness. I know a lot of people just read the sections and do practice questions right after. Does anyone here only use the lecture videos and then skip reading the notes, going straight to the practice questions?
If it’s your first time on here you should probably have spent some time searching the forum for the answer before posting. There’s even a thread a couple lines down from yours called “retake level 1” where the first post says that the person failed using just schewser and the qbank… then further down there is someone else who comments on the videos. search things like “Schweser video” supersunny said he passed the exam “watching only Schweser videos no Qbank” The label of that thread is "Schweser videos " If you’re all about the shortcuts I would say you’re probably going to fail no matter what you use to study.
^Nobody said anything about shortcuts, why assume? Schweser videos are not “shortcuts” in that sense at all. Some of us learn better in a lecture setting. If I hear it, see it demonstrated and then do the problems myself, I learn better than by simply reading textbooks cover to cover. Learning by listening and then doing is the way to go for me and may be for many people. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE.
Again with the search police… Dank - comments like your are a lot more annoying than the repetitive posts.
@dank sorry about not searching. I went through and looked through several threads. Some users mentioned using the videos, but it was more of an off hand comment. As for short cuts, I’m not trying to take any. I acknowledge that things would actually move more quickly if I just read the notes. I can read much faster than the Schweser instructor can type, trust me. However, my mind is more easily side tracked. A number of things can happen: I want to take “breaks” more often, or falling asleep, etc. So my main concerns were that I would prefer to use the videos over the notes - IF THEY COVERED THE MATERIAL JUST AS WELL. But, if the response was overwhelmingly that the videos would not be enough, I did not want to watch 2-3 hrs of lectures each day, only to find out test day it wasn’t good enough. If that is the case, I would rather slam caffeine and read all the notes. @everyone else, thank you for the constructive comments.
Using videos for L2…EXCELLENT complement to the notes, but I personally would not ignore reading the notes either. I watch the video 1st, then read the Schweser book while making my own notes. But everyone learns differently. Note: the instructor doesnt type or write on a blackboard. There is a small box to the left of screen where the video of the instructor is displayed, who just sits there and speaks, and the remaining right side (bigger part of screen) displays a power point presentation. A reading on average takes 50-60 mins max via the videos. Covering a reading via the notes should take you between 60-90 minutes if youre doing it thouroughly. So watching videos is faster than you reading notes. I think Schweser lets you see a sample on their website before buying, so check it out coz it does cost $500.
Use them both, Video is useful in understanding deeper after reading And for refresh everything before exam

Preparing for the CFA exam is no different than preparing for any regular class in Finance. Read the chapter…Do the problems at the end of the chapter. Identify weak areas, Review the Chapter, Go over the problems again. Take the Test. The one question you have to ask yourself…When I studied for my four year degree, did I use a prep company to pass the class? Check the following blog… http://www.qc4blog.com/?p=905
I didn’t just say go search the forums and f off to the person. … I sent examples of threads I searched for that they could look at. You are right that one liner emails about not searching are annoying but so are emails like yours. thanks. yodacaia Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Again with the search police… Dank - comments > like your are a lot more annoying than the > repetitive posts.
Depends… But for me, and I think for any person with reasonable IQ (no offense to anyone), you are better off using your time reading the material. There realy is not much that you cant understand if you read it… The videos waste 30 mins showing an example you can skim in 3 mins… I did watch them in car, tredmil, just so that I make best use of THAT time, but for study time i think reading is better…
