Does working at a valuation firm have good exit opportunities? Basically if you are an analyst, whatever at H&L or Duff and Phelps, stout risius ross, etc. could you transition to equity research, or private equity, or some other type of buy side roll? valuations seem to be more and more important, and these firms will prolly do well because of all the work from PE and hedge funds. Are the exit opportunities decent?
No opinions on valuation work, and where it can possibly lead? I see many people at all these firms with CFA’s.
$300K for manager? Whats the career path? How long one becomes a manager? Is that the max upside one expect? Wut about entry level employee? Based up on the other posts I wud gather that valuation is a) not usefull b) not very enjoyable and c) loooked down upon but e) relatively good pay for the worklife balance.
I have worked with Stout Risius Ross before, and from what I gather a senior analyst makes around 90k with bonus, and a manager makes around 170k with bonus. I believe managing directors can make around 400k there. From what I do now it seems like something i could easily transition into, as i do valuations internally, and i would make a considerable amount more (i dont make 90k now, thats like a 40k increase). my concern would be exit options. I know some very big players in valuations, and could land a sr analyst job in a second with just level 1 complete. Why would it not be useful? If you are valuing derivatives, restricted stock, crazy debt, etc. which is a large portion of the work, being that auditors want outside verification of hedge funds asset valuations before they will sign off on the audit.
manager at SRR is about 4-6 years experience and a cfa, but they make nowhere near 400k
170k for a manager? That sounds pretty high. more like 110k - 140k. My knowledge is from valuation groups at accounting firms though, maybe SRR pays higher??
They do. Look at the background of most of the higher level SRR guys, it is mostly ex accounting guys, and ex houlihan guys. If they are stealing houlihan guys they are paying some dough considering that most people put houlihan and duff and phelps at the top of the list for valuation firms. I personally know 1 of the R’s from SRR (my boss has known him since SRR was a 2 man firm back like 15-20 years ago). In having dealt with a couple valuation firms for our alternative assets, I find that SRR is tops, and they charge about half of what h&l charges.
