watches

I don’t think you should pay attention to what other people wear or how other people wear their clothes.

if the watch looks good and you like it, why not?

you wear it the way you want!

This is the only Ball watch I would consider but they ruined it by putting the date on an angle between the 4 and 5. WTF is that? When I say consider, I mean the only one that looks somewhat normal. I would never buy any of thesePOS though.

I think that’s because when you look at your wrist (on the left hand in this case), you rarely bend your arm at 90 degree, so putting the date on an angle makes it easier to read.

That’s even more asinine - that’s not a left handed watch.

I’m agreeing with Blake if that assessment is correct.

That date on an angle has to be one of the worst designs I have ever seen.

And those gaudy neon Ball watches TF was posting remind me of a cross between a Timex Indiglo and a Casio G Shock. Absolutely horrible in appearance.

It’s just as well Blake. A man’s watch like an x-lume would look silly on your wee wrist. Better to stick to your bat mitzvah Tag.

LMAO

ok i think i’m leaning towards a rolex datejust 36mm for the wife, how’s that for classy blake?

for those with experience with Rolex:

what is a reasonable price for pre-owned, say <10 years old? on ebay pricing is all over the map.

it appears there’s quite an industry dedicated to fakinig rolex watches so i’m wondering what is the best way to go about making sure the watch i buy is authentic. I’m guessing buying on ebay is not advisable even if it has box & papers. do AD’s typically carry pre-owned? anyone have advice on this?

So what exactly is the benefit of getting one of these mechanical watches over a normal quartz watch? To me, these look no different from your basic Fossil, Citizen etc.

Used Datejust should cost between $3000 and $5000. The cost will be higher if you want materials other than steel or certain features and designs. The pink thing in your picture, for instance, will probably cost extra. For your purposes, perhaps it would also be worth looking into the “Ladies’ Datejust”, which is basically a smaller Datejust (26-31 mm, I believe), and is meant for women. The smaller Datejust will also cost less, meaning you can use the savings to pay for different materials, like gold tone or white gold bezel, or different watch faces. It would be a mistake, in my opinion, to fall into the “bigger is better” mentality of watch design in recent years. Buy the watch that fits the person, not the watch which “must be better” because it is bigger and more expensive.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with buying off EBay. Just be very discerning about which sellers to buy from. Only choose sellers with many high ratings and a return policy. Make sure they service the watches before shipping - this is worth around $500 to the buyer. Also, bring the watch for inspection once you get it. You can also use websites like Chrono24, which lists watches from brick and mortar stores. Don’t be picky about using only Authorized Dealers. The whole point of Authorized Dealers is to drive up prices. The only true benefit that they provide is the factory warranty. However, many gray market dealers have full service shops and offer warranty service also. Furthermore, a refurbished watch should really not give you any mechanical issues, unless it’s certain models (cough… Tag Heuer Carrera…) which have design flaws.

I checked out both sizes and think the larger is a better fit. So which grey market dealers would you recommend, I.e. Which have bankable warranties? I still wonder how they end up with legit new watches…

ill check out chrono24, I’ve tried to wade through WUS with little success.

jomashop is a gray market seller they have good deals sometimes

DO NOT BUY EXPENSIVE WATCHES ON INTERNET.

I mean, i wouldn’t buy a Rolex on ebay. honestly that’s probably one of the worst places to buy.

I don’t know about where you live but in Tokyo there are plenty of second hand chain stores that sell brand name purses, watches, accessories, etc. where they are verified by the store (and provide gaurentee).

If i were to buy a second hand anything i would go to those places ONLY.

Do not buy it online because it’s “cheaper”, it’s cheaper for very good reasons.

Turd Fergeson likes Balls.

I’ve bought Rolexes over the internet twice without issues. On both occasions, I was satisfied with the product and service, saved on the purchase price, and was able to defer sales tax. Overwhelmingly, internet merchants are more honest than dishonest. Like brick and mortar stores, online stores rely on good reputations to maintain their business continuity. A single fraudulent transaction will destroy their business. The fact that many of these merchants have existed for years is evidence of their legitimacy. I would feel safer buying from a well known online store like Jomashop or even smaller stores, compared to a less known brick and mortar store.

Obviously, a smart buyer would take reasonable precautions to ensure that the transaction goes smoothly. Only transact with sellers with spotless reputations and good BBB ratings. Look for warranties, return policies, and disclaimers about the watch’s condition. Practice common sense about items that are priced below market, just like you would with any transaction.

^ Defer sales tax? Did you actually declare the purchases on your state income taxes and make the payment? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone actually doing that.

@Turd. I went through a similar process in buying a watch for my wife as a wedding present. I had it narrowed down to a nice cartier or a similar datejust you posted except with a white gold bezel. All my male friends told me to get the cartier while all my female friends voted for the rolex. I went with the Rolex and judging by current prices, it’s held its value. I paid $2800 back in 01.

Do you want me to spell this out for you?

Of course, for the record, I condone all honest and good faith reporting of tax liabilities.

I know there are probably honest sellers on the internet, but i wouldn’t take the risk.

First of all, the ratings can be manipulated.

Second, they may not be selling 100% fake watches, but they could be using fake parts.

Third, it only takes them 2 second to fold the “ebay business” and open up another one (elsewhere) with another account.

If i were to buy luxury items, i wouldn’t cut corners. i’d rather know for sure what i am buying and be able to try it on and see the actual thing before buying.

Not to mention, online return and warenty is a huge hassle!

But most of your criticism could also apply to brick and mortar stores, which might also repair watches with non-original parts and whose ratings are much more opaque - how many ratings can you find for a used watch store down your street in Japan? Personal referrals are often anecdotal and not statistically useful. I would not buy an expensive item from a new eBay seller with few ratings. However, if an online store has been around for 10 years and has thousands of ratings which are 99.99% positive, that is a good indication of good customer experience. Online commerce is a normal thing in the US. Perhaps this is not the case where you live.

Even if online commerce has downsides, we should weigh these against the benefits - most notably, the vastly superior selection and lower prices of online sales. Online returns might be more time consuming, but to most people, this is worth the hundreds (or thousands) of dollars that you could save compared to buying the same item from a brick and mortar store, for which you would pay overhead costs. I would even argue that mail in returns are more convenient, as you can return items at any UPS store. You will wait several days for the store to process the return, but you can spend that time doing other things.

I agree that one benefit of brick and mortar stores is that you can view, hold, and try on the merchandise before making a purchase. However, if someone is truly going to spend thousands of dollars to buy a watch online, I would hope that they would take some effort to physically examine a watch of the same model before making the purchase. I certainly did.
