watches

I never liked rolex. The brand conjures up the diamond encrusted bezel and gold bracelets. But recently, I discovered the Sports series like Submariner and DeepSea Sea Dweller to be very nice. Ok, I guess I’ve been ignorant and James Bond has been wearing one since the 50s but I’ve been re-introduced to the brand.

Bond changed to Omega in Casino Royale!

Bond switched to Omega starting in the 90’s. http://www.jamesbondwiki.com/page/James+Bond+Watches

“Vintage” Rolex Oyster circa 1979 for $1,395 in case anyone’s looking…as always, caveat emptor http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=msg&th=1579161&start=0&rid=100143

Didn’t see it mentioned elsewhere but if you are looking in the 1,100+ range Tag Heur makes some very nice watches, and they aren’t over the top in terms of bling.

Is Favre-Leuba a good company?

I just followed the link to that impressive 86K watch at Amazon, and now every week I get an email with a list of luxury watches from them, as well as a list of very cheap watches. Somehow nothing in the 1K range.

My father gave me a Rolex Submariner “Red” from back in the day. It is something that I never would have purchased for myself but it has a special meaning to me. He wore it through two tours in Viet Nam and almost everyday since then until giving it to me. The watch is older than I am. I have no idea if it is “in fashion” these days, but I don’t really care either.

My quest for a watch has brought me to 2 choices. Which to go with? Hamilton Seaview – more sporty, not sure if dressy enough for everyday work: http://www.isozaki-tokei.com/im/5151e.jpg Hamilton Jazzmaster Auto Chrono – dressy, maybe too dressy for everyday wear/ with jeans: http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a283/DavoinTokyo/IMG_1514.jpg I really like the Hamilton designs, so I think I will stick w/ that brand. Thoughts?

I like both. The second one is yummy

The first one looks like a normal watch. The second one looks more interesting.

Question for experienced buyers: I’ve noticed a lot of the online “deals” don’t offer the manufacturer’s warranty. You get the warranty card, but supposedly it has to be stamped by an authorized dealer for it to be valid. They offer the store warranty, but i’m not sure how good they generally are. And they don’t seem to be very forthcoming about the fact that they are not selling the item with the manufacturer’s warranty. So, is it worth it to pay the extra +/- $200 to get the manufacturer’s warranty?

finally pulled the trigger on this one: http://forums.watchuseek.com/attachments/f357/262465d1267496122-jazzmaster-chrono-auto-need-help-deciding-hamiltonh32616553-jpg thanks Numi, topher, others for the advice.

Great choice, jbaldyga. Classy watch and very versatile…can definitely wear it with a suit, or shirt and jeans for a night out on the town. How much did that go for? Around $800-900 range?

Good guess on the price, about $900 after shipping. I stayed away from the grey market deals on ebay and amazon. i bought it new w/ papers and a valid manufacturer’s warranty from an AD. not knowing how to spot a fake, i figured it was the best way to go even for an extra $75 or so. Thanks again.

jbaldyga, My local watch repair man tells me that the internal workings for Hamilton are made by Omega and that Hamiltons are great value for money because you get the quality of Omega without paying a premium for the name. I can’t seem to find any evidence of this online, but I’d like to think he’s not pulling my leg.
