What happens if you can't make it for the L1 exam?

Will you have to pay the program enrollment fee again if/when in the future you sign up to retake L1? Or, do you only have to pay the exam fee again? I checked google, and I found something on the LIFA program website that said the following: “If you do not show for the CFA exam on the one date that it is offered, you lose your enrollment fee. There are no refunds for CFA exam fees.”

I pick A) sunk cost

The only exception is if you are registered to sit in Bangkok and you can’t make it through the ragging masses of protesters, they will transfer you to the June 2009 sitting and even send you free books if you cover the customs charges.

exam fee

I think you lose everything. There is a time to change registration, ie postpone the exam to a later date (I think you have to pay a small fee when you do this), etc. But if you just don’t show up and haven’t made arragements to cancel I think you would have to repay everything to reenroll.

You DON’T lose everything. The enrollment fee is a one time cost. However, the exam fee is a sunk cost. Why can you not go?

I am pretty sure you lose the enrollment fee if you want to move to exam in different year. i.e. if you sit level1 in June and fail you can take december without paying enrollment again. But if you go to take in June again, they charge you again as it is a new “academic year” and you get a whole new set of books. At least that happened to a colleague of mine.

No, enrollment is paid once per candidate. You don’t pay it again when you take lv 2 and 3, JUST the exam fee

Hmm, seems like we have some differing answers. I figured the enrollment fee is only a one time fee, and it doesn’t make a difference if you no show vs. taking it and fail. I thought you only have to pay the exam fee the next time you want to take L1 (regardless of when/what year)…

You have to pay the exam fee but dont need to pay the enrollment fee again.

I’ll be willing to bet $1000 that you don’t have to pay the enrollment fee again. If you really want to be sure, contact CFAI and ask.

That’s not true. Enrollment fee is a one time charge. Once you paid for it, you don’t have to pay for the 2nd time. However you have to pay for the exam fee next time you register, and it doesn’t matter if you withdraw or don’t show up- you still have to pay for the same money. Actually it doesn’t make sense to me why CFAI make that withdraw option to us.To me it doesn’t make any difference on the cost basis. The only difference is the time to re-register: if you withdraw, you don’t have to wait after the release of the result to register; but if you don’t show up, you have to do so.
