What School you went to?

bchadwick: Pomona College, or Pomona City?? topher: I know that ML recruited into their analyst program, but when I was in school and my friend told me he was going into an I-banking internship my reaction was… what’s internet banking?? I was not into finance at all at that point  There are many successful CMC alums in the industry,ie Robert Day who recently donated $200 million to build a Finance Program, but I don’t know if the reputation extends beyond a sm circle…

I used to work in J.T Marlin

Susquehanna University, PA

Wow, the schools represented in this forum are a lot less impressive than I thought they would be. Makes my state school education look like an Ivy League!

He heh, Pomona College, and not “oh, I have a friend that went to CalPoly, Pomona”… Just to prove it - Hail Pomona Hail, We thy sons and daughters sing. Praises of thy name, Praises of thy fame, 'Til the heavn’s above shall ring (shall ring). To the name of Po-mo-na Alma Mater hail to thee, To the spirit true Of the white and blue All hail, Pomona hail. (Though personally, I liked the song “Torchbearers” better) And yeah, Pomona was the Roman goddess of fruits and nuts.

It’s kinda like the “oh, your doing the CFA?? Studying is brutal huh?? I had to take the series 7 a couple months ago…” line. I’m co 2003, how 'bout you?? I have no Pomona hate btw  I actually took over half my classes on your campus since I was a 5-C major (IR).

You’d be surprised how some reluctant Ivy alums are to admit to it in unnecessary situations. Understandably so considering how much eye-rolling / condescending reactions they receive. All the Princeton/ Harvard guys I know skirt the issue so they don’t have to deal with being put in an awkward situation.

My son wants to go Harvey Mudd. Any connections I can use?

I can say however that I have all the respect for Mudd kids. I would often find myself amazed by their knowledge and passion for science. They were the “cool” geeks, that studied and immersed themselves in their work not because daddy wanted them to be an engineer but because they actually passionate about it. I had a great experience at the consortium and played water polo w/ a couple girls from Mudd and they loved it there too. Socially, I thought it was one of the livelier campus- including a school sponsored porn club that projected onto the dorm walls on a weekly basis. Not the prettiest campus though.

One of my high school friends went to Harvey Mudd. He’s 24 years old and making close to 6 figures now. He narrowed it down to UC Berkeley (my alma mater) or Harvey Mudd and chose the latter. I believe no student there has ever achieved a 4.0 GPA in the history of the school. This may or may not be a consideration when your son wants to apply for jobs. His gpa may be deflated.

School-sponsored porn club?! He’s going to Liberty University. He can just forget that plan. Little buzzard probably knew about that part. Edit: Is it free porn or would my fees pay for it?

I spent some time getting to know one of the founding partners of AQR (very large quant hedge fund) a few years ago who is possibly one of the most successful people on an earnings basis to ever come out of Harvey Mudd.

It really shouldn’t be, anyone who has that sort of a reaction is a tool an deserved to be made aware of it. Now, I don’t think there is a need to wear the Harvard sweatshirt to happy hour (although I have a feeling that is sometimes a Ferrari key chain sort of move), but anyone who’s made that sort of accomplishment should not be vilified for it.

I had a friend who was an econ major taking a high level math class on the CMC campus and was considered a whiz who ended up scoring a B- bc a phantom Mudder who never came to a single class ruined the curve. I know at CMC the the grades are definitely deflated; in the econ department, the average grade is set to a C… as it should be, but rarely is anymore these days. My girlfriends said many of their exams were take home closed book- they have a very tight honor code and being so small and close knit- it is actually followed.

CMC and Pomona only pony up for beer.

Possibly… I don’t know any professors there, but I might be able to find some alum types, for whatever it’s worth. One of my best friends at Pomona who’s now at NASA hung out with a whole crowd of Mudders. I seem to recall that knowing how to ride a unicycle shows that you’ll blend in with the culture. I did look at Pomona’s web pages, and noticed that many of my old Physics and Politics professors are still there, including my undergraduate advisor… an eastern orthodox priest and former student of Feynmann who taught quantum mechanics, and also that God plays dice with the universe. I liked the guy a lot, had tremendous respect for him, but he killed me with his assignments called “daily integrals.” It was at that point when I realized that I could be good at physics, but I’d never be *great* at it.

I definitely have heard “I went to a school in Cambridge [Mass],” many times before. Interestingly enough, none of them were from MIT. I usually just chuckle a bit. I mean, if you’re trying to be discreet, then be discreet. Otherwise just come out with it. We’re all grownups here, and the H-bomb isn’t as big a thing as a real H bomb.

Good point bchadwick. I’m more impressed with…“I have a CFA charter” than “I did my undergrad in finance at blah top school…but I’m not going to say what it is.”
