Been in real estate (mainly large transactions and some investment strategy) for 6 years. It has been a good couple of years but that is of course over and much speak in favour of a very boring market (at least here) for the coming years. What will be an interesting sector/type of work over the next five years when it comes to the investment sector (investment management/analysis/PE etc)?? Commodities? Forestry? Environmental stuff (what)?

Here’s what I think: Healthcare/pharmaceuticals and alternative energy - Obama industries Biotech Legal/compliance - This is sort of a stretch, and it will probably be boring, but there will be money to be made here as regulation and reporting requirements for financial firms become stricter Telecommunications/Mobile devices - How many people are going to buy smart phones in the next 5 years? Finance - Just threw it in there because it will make me feel better about myself. Bankers are like cockroaches - they will never go away, no matter how reviled they are in bad times.
Treynor-- Ask Sam Zell how interesting it was to work in an unloved industry for a decade. This real estate market is a dream come true. Another chance to buy on fear and distress, what’s not to love? …unless you/your fund is one of the bagholders from last go-round.
