What's Wrong with SNL?

SNL this season is pathetic. Elaborate childish sketches, bad scripts, and a lot of amateur acting.

Is it the writers, Michael Lorne, the cast or just NY is losing its creativity edge?

They’re losing their mojo

DE

They lost their mojo years ago. I honestly havent seen lots of good sketches since the Chris Farley/David Spade/Sandler/Rock/Norm era. They had a couple great ones here and there during Will Ferrels time but since then its been them focusing on Tina Fey (who is ok, but its sad that she was one of the “funny ones”) and Jimmy Fallon and watching him giggle through all of his skits.

The main thing it seems is that top writers dont need to do SNL before moving on to other things, and SNL used to be the way for a comedian to get a show/movie deals, but it isnt anymore. In another era Seth Rogan & his buddies would have done SNL and it might have been interesting at least.

SNL is heard this same complaint every year since '76.

And, yes, when Farley, Knealon, Spade, Rock, etc were there, they heard the same exact complaint.

LARRY DAVID should host every week

SNL before 2015 was not bad. This season has similar quality as reruns from the pathetic 1980-1985 seasons.

Other shows am watching:

John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight have a lot of good material. It’s carrying some of Jon Stewart’s DNA

Stephen Colbert was better in the Colbert Report

Conan is consistent. He’s funny scripted or not

Jimmy’s The Tonight Show is better than the last 10 years of Jay Leno’s

SNL hasnt been consistantly good for a long time, top writers & comedians no longer need to go through it.

John Oliver is hilarious but I dont get to catch him often sadly. You are right on Colbert, the CR was much better than his tonight show. Conan is still pretty good, he has some of the best scripted bits of everyone.

I really cant stand Fallon, his writers can do some great sketches but Fallon has the worst delivery I have ever seen.

Of all the late night hosts Jimmy Kimmel is the best IMO. He is 10x better at interviewing guests than the others, he finds a way to get the guest to be relaxed and he engages them much better than the others.

As far as what I enjoy on TV now, The Grinder is one of the funniest shows I have seen in a long time. Wasnt expecting it to be funny, but I am dying every time I watch it.

I was also reflecting on Kimmel being the best interviewer of the pack (though Craig Ferguson was better).

I’m a huge Colbert fan, but his interviews could use some work. My favorite part is when Colbert’s sitting at his desk doing similar to what he did on CR. He seems more comfortable interviewing smart people than making chit-chat with celebrities.

Agreed 100%. The caviat being that Craig Ferg tended to interview much smaller names and was on later at night so he had a lot more leeway to be goofy (which he was fantastic at).

I always loved when Colbert would bring scientists or experts in their field on his show, but the late night game is all about bringing on Katy Perry so she can tell you about her new album.

Craig Ferguson was an underrated underdog. Lost his element in his game show gig. He can’t compete with HGN.

SNL will never be as good as it was when you were 17 to 23. That’s when SNL was absolutely at its greatest. Same goes for music.
