When to do EMBA

Will EMBA help boost your career to management level, or better to do it after promotion?

It’s for executives… If you’re an executive, you should do it. If you’re not, you probably shouldn’t (my opinion).

I did an EMBA at Queen’s University, which is a good Canadian school. Not comparable to one of the top US schools probably, but likely better than average. The program can be a great learning experience IF you put the time in and really do the work. Unfortunately these programs are cash cows for B-Schools and they are not selective enough IMO, or hard enough. There was a surprising amount of people who did their best to get through with minimal effort, and were able to do so. Over the past two decades, MBAs in general, and EMBAs in particular have been devalued. They still carry some weight, but not much unfortunately. My opinion only. The value of an EMBA program over the normal MBA is of course that the schedule is arranged for people who are working. The other advantage is that your classmates are experienced from other industries and that can help enrich the learning experience. The big disadvantages are the cost, and also the watered-down difficulty level.

There are 2 types of EMBA here, local for 30 yo, and international, or global, with an average age of 38. If you have business experience, not necessary to be an executive director, then it’s enough for local EMBA, which is usually a weekend program. The Global EMBA costs twice of local EMBA, is much shorter, is a module programme with each module of 1 or 2 weeks. The classes take place in 2 or 3 world locations, often it’s a joint program of 2 or 3 top business schools. And Global is definitely for more senior people, although as long as your company sponsors you, it does not matter if you aren’t an executive director, but you definitely should have business experience. CEOs are not uncommon at these programs

Hey amjf088, can I get your email (or can you ping mine, just transpose gmail.com with mark.samson11), I’d like to learn more about the program you did, opportunities you and your classmates found etc. Is that the degree you got ?: The cornell/queen’s dual-EMBA program that costs 100k… I know some people who are actually doing the dual-EMBA program at Queen’s…and they are doing it distance-learning! via teleconferencing equipment…100k for distance education is a lot of money…

Hey Mark, I sent you an email, let me know if you did not get it, Thanks, Allan

I am doing a MSF at University of London in England and they have an MBA option.
