When to use full vs. partial goodwill when not stated?

I know that under US GAAP, only the full goodwill method is used. However, I’ve come accross problems in which they give a company that follows IFRS, and then ask you to calculate goodwill without stating if the full or partial goodwill method is used?

Is there a quick way to figure this out?

Can you give concrete example? They should hint somehow in the text which method to use, you can’t know in advance. If you’are given for example the minority interest you can define which method is used.

Probably partial goodwill by default.

It does not make sense to have full goodwill when you have the option of partial goodwill. (unless you want a bloated Balance sheet)
