Who ever thought a Job Offer in this environment would be a PITA?

I’m in an interesting situation and not sure what do to. Here’s the situation: I am a graduating senior of a semi-target school. Right now, I have an offer from a Big 4 TS position (not due diligence) that is expiring at the end of the month. I wanted to do ER due to my passion for the capital market and my long term goal of ending up in PM/Analyst position in HF. I recently (day before I got the offer) had an interview with an II ranked ER group in a BB and the feedback was positive but they want to take their time during their FT recruitment process. Damn. The last thing I’m waiting on is to hear whether I got an offer from a well respected MM boutique in the Midwest with a top ranked Starmine group. Internal sources say my odds are decent. I’m worried I’ll be closing a few doors (without a MBA) if I go down the TS route. Advice? Thoughts?

Is it a binding contract?

No, not a binding contract: at-will employment. But, I have been told contradicting things about continuing to interview after accepting the offer. The biggest risk being the Big 4 firm rescinds its offer if they were to find out. NY is a surprisingly small place. Although, there are plenty of stories of firms rescinding offers due to economic conditions and their future employees are screwed because they stopped interviewing.

I haven’t been in this situation per se but if I were you I’d probably take the job and keep interviewing and if they question you about it you could say something about wanting to guarantee you have a job upon graduation. You could point out friends who had jobs at firms that no one thought would go under but did…

Agreed with CzarHC – take the job and keep interviewing. If you end up being at that place for just a month before moving on, you can always leave it off your resume later. Unemployment definitely isn’t the way to go in this market, provided you can help it.

Thanks for the advice. If you were me, how hard would you push for a BB position over a prominent MM boutique (as described earlier)?

My advice: push for everything you can get right now, you’re still in school, odds are you don’t know what you want to do and if you get multiple offers, take the one with the best trajectory/experience/name/people/etc.

Karate, How did you land the BB interview ? Was it through your school or a heahunter ?

An alumni that I’ve been speaking to works @ the BB. When he heard of the opening, he asked them to give me a phone interview. All luck.

Thanks.

Just found out that I got the MM boutique ER job. Pretty excited!!

Congrats buddy!

Thanks! I also found out that for the BB position, their ideal candidate has experience.

Congrats, but why do you think ER is a path to a hedge fund?

My interest in HF is only those with the strategy of deep value/fundamental investing. I can’t think of a better way to learn how to value companies on a fundamental basis than ER.

Congrats KarateBoy! It’s an awesome feeling, go have a few too many tonight.
