Do it. GMAT quant is a different beast from CFA quant. Very different. I think GMAT quant tests your true quant skills because it’s all high school math repackaged to be more difficult.

The GMAT is nothing more than an intensified and focused SAT test. In fact, the same company provides the question bank, and some of the questions even overlap from the SAT into the GMAT bank. The GMAT test can also be used to qualify for Mensa membership, as far as I know.

i’m going to see if i can fit the GMAT in. its essentially a challenge i want to take but its not that important right now. i got fin. modelling to learn, a new job to look for, bloomberg, and of course, you guessed it, CFA.

do i have a chance to get into harvard bs if i had a 2.0 from a univ of cali, passed level3, and scored 780 on the GMAT? also i worked as a quant for 3 yrs at a lil firm.

Well, the a priori probability is what, 10% ? Throwing in a C average undergrad probably makes that application an automatic toss unless your last name is Bush. But of course the best answer is simply to ring up HBS and ask them. I don’t think their adcom reads AF.

I have 700 on GMAT and I just got in Columbia and Wharton. Initially seeing your post I thought 680 is not a concern, since you got CFA done and that speaks volumes of your abilities in finance. However, then I noticed your breakdown showing a very low verbal, now, that means you have to retake it, almost certainly. CFA demonstrates your strong analytical abilities and knowledge in the finance field, i would think your Quant score doesnot matter as much. But the mba schools look for well-balanced professionals, and they usually like to avoid number freaks with no overall skills. So CFA and a low verbal on GMAT you may be delievering a negative stereotype that they are screening out. Now, if you are female, black, age between 25-31, built a non-for-profit charity shelter in west Africa while writing your CFA, and put all of these together in 4 or 5 stunning essays, then you may gain some serious affirmative actions at the top schools. Otherwise, schools are usually concerned with GMAT scores lower than 80 percentile any section in the GMAT test. That’s just my opinion. Good luck!

Out of curiosity, did you use an admissions consultant? your opinion sounds like what they told me, almost verbatim…

No, I did not use any consultants but I have done months of research, read about almost every book on this topic, met and chatted with numerous top school alumni, current students and admission staff. After spending a solid year working on my app (GMAT, research, references, interviews), I felt that I can be an admisson consultant myself. Probably should be one once i start at Columbia just to max the return of all my research efforts. In fact, I am quite confident that my theories are right since I just helped two other friends gotten interviews from top schools. Good Luck

.

since this an MBA thread … if you have a GMAT score of 680 and above and completed Lvl 3 but have undergrad from an insignificant school in an emerging economy country …realistically wht are the chances of getting into a tier 2 school . … Just to add average work experience ( BO stuff ) with not so good grades ??

Possible, since Tier 2 schools are not as competitive (but also depends what you define as Tier 2). I won’t worry too much about your GPA/undergrad since you already got your CFA done. but your candidacy to business schools depends much on the rest of your qualities, work experience, age, demographic, interests… hard to judge without trying

Good Luck why CBS over Wharton?

If anything, given the CFA background, the addcomm would probably prefer to see the high verbal score, and would let me slide if I had any issues on the quant section because of the CFA background. Don’t you think I would need the compelling essays with the 680 regardless of the GMAT breakdown? I mean, if my essays are solid, won’t I be competitive? Or even with good essays (that can help demonstrate verbal/communication skills) do you think my chances are near zilch because of the 65% verbal percentile? Many thanks. Cheers, RG

i don’t think harvard and stanford are looking for candidates that are just “solid”

I got a 590 on my GMAT. I must be darn right stupid.

wow i feel like an idiot…i got a 620…but i have my MBA already…so i guess that’s a whole other situation. i’m attemption to get the charter now, and working toward a CA as well.

Wharton vs. Columbia has been the longest debate in my life, in fact, many people had this struggle. When looking for a strong finance program, the tie usually occurs among Wharton, Columbia and Chicago. Given Chicago totally off the east coast, the tie usually persist between Columbia and Wharton. For me, I personally love Columbia since high school. I talked to at least 108 people about this Wharton vs. Columbia thing, and the answer usually falls between, “Of course Wharton”, or “Either one you won’t go wrong”. Finally I made my decision based on the “fit”, that is, I am in favor of teamwork environment rather than cut-throat competitiveness, also, the “attitudes” of some of the Wharton grads scared me a little, and of course, I would rather be in NYC.

mba, are you doing/have done your mba now at columbia or are you just in the ap phase

Wow…I only scored 540 or 50 when I worte GMAT. Of course, it was about 13 years ago and I barely spoke English. (OK, I still barely speak English now.) The best I could do was to finish 2 of 3 Reading sections. Did they change format/scoring method since then?
